What, in your opinion, would be the best game to start out with?

I don't have an XBox 360 myself, but I read reviews and message boards, so here are some suggestions:

Grand Theft Auto IV:
Free-world yet story-driven crime game, apparently quite affecting.

BioShock:
Artsy first-person shooter with fascinating art deco production design and interesting story.

Dead Rising:
Zombies. Lots of 'em. Should be available quite cheap by now.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare:
Probably the best mainstream shooter. Incredibly atmospheric.

Guitar Hero 2 and/or 3:
Party game fun. Definitely worth checking out.

Rock Band:
Guitar Hero cubed, at least if you've got the money for the hardware and friends who don't mind embarrassing themselves.

Mass Effect:
Uneven but still fascinating sci-fi role-playing game.

Braid:
Artsy platformer. Sounds very intriguing - a game that actually has something to say!

GRID/DIRT/Need for Speed Most Wanted:
Fun racing games. I've played the latter two (on PC) and can very much recommend them.

Lego Star Wars 1 & 2:
Nostalgic fun with a co-op mode, so you can play with someone else. And the prequel trilogy actually comes across as fun in Lego format!

Bully: Scholarship Edition:
GTA, just without the brutality and violence of mob warfare. Instead you get the brutality and violence of high school.

Fuck yeah.

I don't usually swear, but in this case, it seems appropriate.

I think that quite a few of the people here would like (if not love) World of Goo. Runs well even on oldish machines. Very weird, very charming, utterly compelling! Big Grin

“Is that Ms Ephemera hovering over the croquet lawn?”
“Indeed m’lud. She’s marshalled all the haggle-dans. Missy-twigs and vale-nymphs from Claypole Woods. Apparently she intends to tear this house down and dance on the ruins.”

Alright, there are actually games on PS3 that I want now.

Mirror's Edge. Finally, a parkour game.

Little Big Planet. Awesomeness. Nothing but sheer awesomeness.

The startup cost on the PS3 is just too high, though.

Since there are a number of zombie fans around here, you may want to check out Left 4 Dead. It's a four-player co-op game and sounds great so far. Check out the trailer that I've linked to; most previews suggest that minus the cinematic camera angles the game plays pretty much like that.

Yep, Chad, your suggestion is much, much scarier. Unless, that is, there was a co-op mode where four people can play together to rid the earth of the Olson scourge. Dibs on the shotgun!

I think it's actually a zombie shooter. When one of the Olson's says on the cover, "He doesn't even know I'm ALIVE.", that's a dead giveaway, they're zombies. I think Uncle Joey makes a surprise appearance too.
