Tim Cook proudly gives Furious the iFinger

quote:
On Thursday the company’s stock hit $600 for the first time. It dipped by about $15 on Friday, but still — it has seen a 50% rise since Tim Cook took over. This is nothing short of miraculous. It’s hard to remember, but there was a time when analysts talked fearfully about a “Jobs premium” that would decimate Apple shares if the founder were to pass on.

Hate to say I told y'so, but... well, I did tell you so.

Also, while we're on the Apple subject:

Mike Daisey is a lying sack of shit and a disgrace to labor rights activists everywhere.

I hope the fucker rots in hell, because he is totally unapologetic about being a complete fraud (and making a shitton of money off of it, which I have a feeling Apple has a strong case to sue him and take every cent of at this point.)

He has literally made the job of every human being whose goal in life to expose injustice harder for years to come. Was it worth it Mike? Was it really?

Best part:

quote:
Truth is one of Mike Daisey’s earlier monologues, from 2006. The subject: fabulists. Daisey’s own description of the show (scroll down on the page to see it):
quote:

TRUTH follows the fictional and nonfictional stories of James Frey’s (author of A Million Little Pieces) self-destruction, the sordid and shocking tale of J.T. LeRoy, (The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things) a world-famous transsexual author whom the world learned ultimately didn’t exist, and Fernando Pessoa, a Portuguese poet whose great works were written by warring multiple personalities inside his head. These stories are reflected against an autobiographical accounting of Daisey’s own history of lying and telling the truth in an attempt to illuminate the uncertain landscape of the emotionally true, the literally true, and the constant struggle to speak the truth.

Jason Zinoman, in his review of Truth for the NYT:
quote:

He admits that he once fabricated a story because it “connected” with the audience. After telling this lie over and over again, it became so integrated into the architecture of his piece that it became impossible to remove or, perhaps, to distinguish from what really happened. Mr. Daisey seems embarrassed by this confession, but he also pursues the issue further. Is lying acceptable when in service of a greater truth? What does truth mean in the context of art?

George Galloway, possibly the biggest bellend ever to grace a seat in the House of Commons, has got back in by winning a byelection. This is good news neither for the people of Bradford, who are supposed to be represented by him, nor for politics in general,

Ugh.

What's the deal with Galloway? Is he a left-wing demagogue? Is he an Old Labour nostalgist? A quick check on Wikipedia (in-depth research FTW!) hasn't really given me a clearer idea of what makes him a bellend (first time I've heard that term, but I like it!).

He's not so much left-wing as a massive, massive opportunist. He has a record of sucking up to tyrants (although so to do many others, inc, say, Tony Blair).

His current opportunistic ploy is to court Muslim voters by portraying everyone else as anti-Islam. In Bethnal Green he played to anti-semitism by emphasising that the Labour MP (Oona King) was both Jewish and American. When challenged, the defence was that he'd been battling anti-semitism for longer than she had. (He's not Jewish.) In Bradford he sent out this extraordinary letter, portraying himself as more authentically Muslim than the, er, Muslim Labour candidate.

He's got no shame.

That is pretty disgusting - and doesn't speak particularly highly of the constituency, I'm sad to say...

He's the world's biggest George Galloway fan. He has the trappings of an old leftie - specifically the pro-Palestinian, anti-US strain, and he springs from the hard socialist Scottish labour. The letter actually does give a reasonable insight into his politics, despite it's selective evidence. Despite my antipathy to the former celebrity big brother contestant, investigated for fraud, guest of Saddam, he has campaigned for the (populist, demagogic) positions of many Muslims, so I think it is ok to point this out. Not so ok to sorta kinda claim despite his Christianity he's actually kinda Islamic too.

Guy is a tool, no doubt.

It's kind of understandable, though. He's got a very slick, very active team, and he's able to promise the moon - which of course any candidate from a bigger party can't, because they don't set their own policies. He's also (allegedly - he's very litigious) reputed not to be afraid of dirty tricks: for example, when he stood against Oona King, there was a mysterious rumour doing the rounds, that proved very persistent despite all her protests that it was ridiculous, that she was planning to ban halal meat.

Ironically, given his more-Muslim-than-the-actual-Muslim-candidate stance, there's also some suspicion (which won't be confirmed or otherwise until the stats come out) that Galloway benefited a lot from the white working-class vote in Bradford, some of whom did not wish to vote for the Labour candidate because he was a Muslim of Asian heritage - Bradford is a city that is much more racially divided than most British cities.

The only crumb of comfort is that Bradford will probably only tolerate him until the next election, because he is also reputed to be an extremely shit constituency MP, rarely turning up.

Running around thinking the sky is falling on their head because there might be a fuel haulage strike, which will only happen after a 7 day warning and will likely only last 24 or 48 hours.

Shesh!

For the same reasons, presumably, that people stock up food as for a siege when there is going to be a bank holiday and the supermarkets might be closed for 0.5 of a second.
