That last one, lovely though it is, still makes me want to throw MG a rope or something. Cliffs freak me out.

It's an island just outside Helsinki, in Finland. That picture made me a wee bit homesick.

A Sarajevo Rose.

More

quote:
A Sarajevo Rose is a concrete scar caused by a mortar explosion. Mortar rounds landing on concrete create a unique fragmentation pattern that looks almost floral in arrangement.

As the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo was a central zone of conflict during the Bosnian War. The Bosnian Serb Army, deploying troops and artillery in the surrounding hills. They imposed a blockade on all traffic in and out the city on May 2, 1992, starting what was to be known as the siege of Sarajevo. The Bosnian Serb Army constantly bombarded the civilian population in the city in an effort to prevent the home army from deploying. It has been estimated that on an average day more than 300 shell rounds were fired into the city.

Throughout the city, explosion marks have been filled with red resin to mark where mortar explosions resulted in one or more deaths.

"The other night I dreamed that King George VI was dead, and that Helen Hardinge had somehow or other got herself proclaimed Queen of England, and that I was detailed to go and tell her that it wouldn't do at all; and when I did this, all she said was, 'You see, I am really Queen Mary,' and I said, 'Oh very well' - words to that effect, and woke up.

Last night I dreamed that Eisenhower came to stay with us, and he insisted on being put to sleep in the dog kennel, with a collar and chain about his neck."

- Sir Alan Lascelles, 19 February 1980

I think I could use a daisy picture after DM's, honestly. 300 mortar rounds a day.

I rarely take pictures that I think are good, but I liked these two:

ETA: I made the butterfly pic a bit smaller.

A poster I saw on the Underground lately... Someone thought it was lacking a little something.

Close-up (look at her teeth):

Superbly Sublime Splendiferous Sterling Shiftmaster of the Realm of Unproductivity and Procrastination

You are a Player. There are no small parts, only small people, and we suspect that's due to malnutrition endemic to the period. Every night you're a different person, knave or king, man or woman, 875 roles in all. The ones the audience liked got you applause, and the ones they didn't got you pelted rotten vegetables. The theater is a harsh mistress, but you love her dearly. Plus, it beats working for a living!

'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: 'we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'
'How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice
'You must be' said the Cat 'or you wouldn't have come here'

Last night was yet-another-snowstorm. Snapped this, this afternoon not too far from my flat.

This 'wetlands' is the reason why the locale becomes 'Mosquito Gulch' in the summer months. Occasionally, I stop and help elderly turtles across the road and into the swamp from this POV.

The Box Turtles are obliged. They don't put up any fuss.

The Snapping Turtles are nasty. They also smell bad. For the Snappers, I let them crunch down on a thick stick. Then, while they're happy thinking they've got a piece of me, I pick them up and drop them in the weeds on the other side of the road.
