McCain picks Sarah Palin

Governor of Alaska. Is she qualified or is McCain looking for bitter Hillary supporters? It feels more political than about qualifications. Given McCain's age, she will be scrutinized about her ability to step in if needed.

EDIT:

She is three years Obama's junior, as well, and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

I dont know a whole lot about her. But I'm happy with it on the surface. And yes, it is to lure the Hillary supporters. It's also to take away the edge of the "first black president" angle that the dems have.

What do you think about Hilary and Bills bid to "unify" the democratic votes, by unequivocally supporting Obama? Is that going to change things do you think? Or will McCain still get a lot of votes from former Hilary supporters?

From what I've read, it looks like a largely perception-related choice, BUT it also looks like she has decent qualifications besides. Pretty sure he wouldn't have picked someone completely useless just to get women voters.

For one thing, she has a lot of experience dealing with the oil and energy:
quote:
She was mayor and a council member of the small town of Wasila and was chairman of the state Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which regulates Alaska's oil and gas resources

I haven't read enough to see what her specific views are, but just having someone you can say has experience is a strong move. It gives whatever stance their campaign takes a bit more credibility.

I'm sure this angle will also come up:
quote:
Palin made her name in part by backing tough ethical standards for politicians. During the first legislative session after her election, her administration passed a state ethics law overhaul.

I don't think her lack of foreign policy and defense experience will hurt too much, because McCain will just say that he has more than enough such experience for both of them. It's not something he needed a boost on in public perception.

I think that there are democrats who dont want to vote for Obama, for stupid reasons (mostly because they're racist ass-hats). McCain might be able to pick them up. Or they might just stay home.

Hill-Bill getting up there endorsing Obama probably probably wont influence anyone's vote. Even the bitter Hillary supporters would probably come around to Obama eventually (except the ones that were never going to vote for him anyways).

McCain is making a big deal (on the advertising front) of a few high(ish) profile Hillary supporters who are coming over to him, but I'd guess they are by far the minority.

Back on the "international experience" front... I guess the democrats COULD make the argument that she is not "ready to be president if something happens". Biden's got the edge on that front. But I don't think they'll go that route, because the Republicans will just come back with "yeah, great, but Obama's not ready to be president NOW."

I think it evens the playing field: you are a racist if you don't vote for Obama, and you are a sexist if you don't vote for McCain. Now both parties have a way to cry foul and to call anyone who doesn't agree with them a bigot.

Yeah, McCain kinda shoots himself in the foot by picking her, but there's no way Obama can attack him for her lack of experience.

Heh... both sides are already issuing quotes about her that go against their previous stances on Obama...

From Democratic Senator Charles Schumer:
quote:
"While Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling," Schumer said.

From the McCain campaign:
quote:
Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president.

The Democrats knocking on the basis of lack of experience, while the Republicans are boosting based on quality of time being more important than length.

Good old poliltics Razz

That's exactly what I thought! And it's exactly what I immediately assumed everybody else would think as well. And if so, will it then work?

And nobody is talking about how they plan on governing, not even the candidates. Platitudes are not sound governance.

I'd immediately thought it was a case of "Well, they may have a black guy, but look! We've got a skirt! We could've picked another balding, pink-faced, sixtyish Yale grad yacht owner named J. Dollar Manhood, but we didn't! See? We're progressive, too!"

Not of itself. But it certainly gives the undecided white centrist minivan-driving pro-life soccermommy voter something new to think about.

I think this is a very, very sly move on the part of the McCain campaign.

I hope that by having a potential "first" in both teams, the voters will truly be forced to focus on the issues and platforms of the candidates.

Palin brings conservative social issues back to the debate (she's pro-life and anti-gay marriage...although she does advocate partner benefits for same-sex couples), and she's also noted for having made a stand against corruption within her own party at a state level.

So conservatives who were thinking about not voting at all will probably end up casting a vote, thanks to her presence on the McCain team.

That said, I have a feeling undecided voters (people who are dissatisfied with current Republican administration but aren't sure about Obama's readiness to lead) are probably even more undecided now.

That was my thought, Alaura. This was very much a pick based upon who the person is (young, female) rather than what she stands for (although there doesn't appear to be anything that would DISqualify her as a GOP running mate).
