World's End hasn't been working for me for about three days. Was that ... just me? If so, what the hell?

There was some sort of adjustment/upgrade somethingsomething.

It wasn't just you, but I only lost contact for about a day.

I'd like a relative-touchiness check, please.

Ex just said to me "you should get the new tesco magazine - it has some really easy recipes in it". He was attempting to be helpful, but I took it as insulting, and pointed out to him that I have worked successfully as a chef, and also have all the recipe books I need, which I will happily use on those few occasions when the thought of experimental cooking doesn't bore me.

Which of us is being rude? I can't work it out at all.

from what you have said about him before he just doesn't bloody think, and is emoting his own cooking skills onto you, because that is easier than acknowledging your skills and talents.

Eh- maybe he's the one who needs easy and he didn't actually mean to be insulting.
However, he is the King Of Oblivious. Expecting him to "get it" EVER may be a case of you pounding your head on a wall.

So- touchy you? Probably.

With cause (in a historical context)?

Thank you both!

I think you have both got it about right. He was utterly baffled at the idea he was being insulting, and yet I should probably have let it go unremarked. He did then say he was trying one of the recipes out.

Ah well!

I am trying to move to another city. In fact, my current plan is to move sometime in January. Ergo, I am looking for a job there.

In my experience, organizations tend not to grant interviews to people applying from out of town. At the moment, I'm saying in my cover letters that I'm planning on relocating there, and will be in town several times over the next few weeks. (Thus far, no luck, but I've only been looking for a few weeks)

My very good friend in that city, who I might end up moving in with, gave me permission to use his address on my resume.

Should I?

Well, I kinda feel like I'm lying, because I don't live there right now, and I'm not sure yet if I'm going to live there in the future.... I'm concerned that I'm going to get a phone call being like "come in for an interview tomorrow!" and I'm going to have to say "well, I'm not actually living in town yet" and they're not going to hire me because I lied.

Of course, that situation seems pretty unlikely. And at the moment, there's a pretty good chance that I will move there, which I could tell them.

Plus, it seems like putting local addresses on resumes (family member's or friend's houses) isn't all that uncommon.

You could say "I'm in the process of relocating - my interim address in [new location] is xyz, and my [old location] address is abc" which from what you've said wouldn't be a lie.

ETA: I agree absolutely that one shouldn't lie on a CV, but if I say "I'm going to the shop tomorrow", and the shop burns down in the night, I will not have been caught out having said a deliberate untruth. You've stated that you are working to relocate. This takes time, and I don't think it's unreasonable to list a local address.

Now I'm the one worried that it's stretching the truth too far!

If anyone knew where they were, wouldn't it be the Royal Astronomical Society in Burlington House?

Don't worry! It's not stretching the truth; I put the address at the top, and in my cover letter said that I'm in the process of relocating and plan to be in the area permanently by January. So if they're just looking at the address for someone local, they'll still call me, but I can say "oh, I can't come in tomorrow, because I'm not in the area yet, as I said in my cover"

Let's see if I get more responses now...

Nah. There's virtually no way they could ever find out, and even if they somehow did (after one got the job), I really can't think they'd care at that point. It's not like lying about your references or skills or anything. It's a lie on the order of saying, "I'm a self-starter" or "My biggest flaw? That I work TOO hard!"
