And where does this fit in?
Given the talk about sensitivity, what should we make of this comedian's proposal?

Having a gay bar next door would surely offend muslim sensibilities. How does this differentiate from the furore about the mosque? How far does it mirror the situation?

In this case it's a joke, but still, to what degree should a gay bar take notice of the offense and sensitivity of their neighbours?

That's a very useful link, thank you.

I was just in NYC, and we visited Ground Zero and the Memorial Preview site.

I didn't really hear about the mosque, etc, till after we'd been there but when I did I couldn't believe it.
Surrounding the Ground Zero area is, like that blogger said, normal NYC.
Like I said on Facebook the other day, freedom of religion has to go in all directions.
A friend of mine sarcastically said "Yes, because we all know it was only white American Christians who died in the attacks!"

*shakes head*

How about a barbecue restaurant specializing in pulled pork across the street to balance it out?

It's important to consider the New Yorkers' standpoint on things. Bizarre juxtapositions of culture are normal there.

I can't watch Beck for more than ten seconds or my brain threatens to rebel and leap out my ears.

I made myself watch the whole thing. He was very enamored of Olberman's addition of "damn it" to the end of one of his sentences. So much so that he and his buddy spent the rest of the voice-over shouting "Damn it!" "Damn it!" and then giggling delightedly. They spent the rest of the piece comparing the relative size of their respective viewer bases.

That fucking hurt to watch. Oh, but actually, I didn't get to see the whole thing- mercifully, it cut off about halfway through the transcript and started playing a commercial for Goldline, which Glenn Beck uses and approves of, apparently.

Although it is undoubtedly true that Olberman is endowed with an overblown sense of theatre that often renders him absurd.

Slacktivist weighs in, although he makes an argument from genetics, not cultural choice.

Sadly, the worst perpetrator that comes to mind is the classic Princess Bride, where two capable and heroic men both initially appear to be left-handed, a situation that creates significant tension for the audience, until - of course - they both reveal that they're right-handed after all. A huge opportunity to bring lefties into the mainstream as idealistic and principled independent agents gets stomped for the sake of making the heroes acceptable to the audience. It's sickening.

I know! I think that's the first non-boardie thread where I didn't hate 95% of the comments!

That thread is, as it was so aptly put in the comments section, full of win. Big Grin

Oh, most certainly. I'm often reluctant to watch Olberman's segments as well. His flaming righteous earnestitude makes me wince. Beck's site made my skin crawl, though. All those adds for Goldline. He seems an opportunistic weasel.

... DAMN IT!!! Razz

I do enjoy me some Slacktivistses, yes. Left Behind Deconstruction commentary threads FTW. Big Grin

Oh, the Left Behind deconstruction is just brilliant. Unfortunately on hiatus, but ultimately what lead me to that blog.

And, yeah, the comments section can be a wonder to behold. It can also be a train wreck combined with a brushfire and lynch mob.

That's why you need to watch the video I linked to above. Ben Affleck's shining moment of his entire acting career was his Olbermann impression on Saturday Night Live.
