I'm re-reading the Harry Potter series for the bazillionth time, in anticipation of the new Fantastic Beasts movie release next week (but also because I need some HPness right now). Remember when we had the great Harry Potter Board invasion, somewhere around book 5?

If you dig through the Other Authors section, you can see the old invasion. Loved the initial and subsequent WGBer invasions!

That invasion was fun! I don’t think I remember the Harry Potter one though.

I usually have one cuppa tea, then a bit later one cuppa coffee, but I think today needs more coffee, so I’ll break out the french press.

I just finished listening to the last ep of book four of Belinda Blinked/My Dad Wrote A Porno and it was truly surreal.

It is misty and rainy and gloomy out there and the sun has forsaken me.

I don't usually do coffee, but might make some Kona coffee in the french press on Thanksgiving as a treat.

Oooo re: My Dad Wrote a Porno. Haven't listened to the last ep yet, but plan to tomorrow.

Meh, if we are going Board Changing Reminisce.

The only one is Bowie, Pants, and Triad.

That one lead to hearts being broken (oh TG) GMs changing, the unreal hijack of the death thread, and entire new rooms of the WE Inn being built.

Of course I am not one to speak of such things, and, yeah, i have been known to imbibe a pint or two.

So, yeah, i... really have no point.

Emotional limbo. That’s where I’ve been for most of the year. Actually, since last year, when he had the stroke. Earlier this year dad was officially diagnosed with lung cancer. He’s had COPD for years, and continued to smoke all those years. Last year, after the stroke and all the time he was in the hospital, he was forced to quit. Then I went away for a weekend and he manipulated my husband into taking him to the tobacco store and he started again. I yelled at him and forced him to at least go on the deck. And then, laterm when it got too cold, to trot off to his room and open the door.

Over the course of the year he has steadily gotten worse. Weaker, less coherent, less able to take care of himself. He refused treatment from the getgo. Refused to even biopsy anything and so we have only the vague ‘lung cancer/shadow on the lungs on an xray’ diagnosis. By midyear I was the one doling out his meds, just so I’d be sure that it got done right. I wondered if he’d make it to his birthday in June, and then my birthday in September. He did, but he didn’t know that it was September, so he missed it.

Every time I took time for myself, to go to a movie or when I *gasp* went to that concert, I was convinced that he would pop off when I wasn’t there.

That fake out drop on roller coasters, where it scares you into thinking, oh, here we go, this us the scary bit... that’s what I feel like most of the time.

October, he waffled between coherent and eating well to sleeping all the time and eating breakfast only, maybe a snack later. But always smoking. I mean, he rolled his own, so it did give him a project, but... I don’t miss the whole procedure. The smell of it, the thwacking sound to oack them down, the smell of the smoke... Eventually he ate only breakfast. He paid attention to me ranting about politics or laughed when I showed him cute puppy and kitty pics, but eventually he just slept a lot.

November 3rd I started sleeping out here in the living room with him, because he needed help walking and he frequently went to the bathroom. I got very little sleep that weekend and was frazzled by Monday, when I had a scheduled visit with his social worker. His hospice crew is just all kinds of awesome. November 5th they brought out a bed and gave him a catheter and we all expected that it wouldn’t be very long.

He’s still going. It’s obviously the last stretch, but... I will keep him here as long as I can. Even if it squicks me out to know he will die here and there will be a corpse in my living room.

I really don’t know what he’s waiting for. I need Granny Weatherwax to show him the door.

Love ya, dad.

(I know this was long, but I’m not sorry, because I know this family loves me Smile )

*many hugs Maeve*

He will go when it is his time. I'm glad that you've been able to be there as a guiding figure for him, though it's been quite a heavy lift (emotionally and otherwise) for you. *hugs*

We need a Dweller or aitpata (or how ever Amy alien presented herself way back when)... Does anyone know how or where she ended up? I likely missed something there with her leaving the board.

And to re-iterate, FB is the devil.

Should I count the ways? Seriously, should I link tech articles about how fucking awful things have become about being the product?

I never liked it to begin with, I only joined to play scrabble with people.

I think FB is just easier to use, if you’re mainly using a phone. I wish there was a place like Ravelry, only for authors.

Heh, that is the demon.

They offer you a free hit or two and bam, addiction.

The lack of data privacy laws is horrible.
....

I remember when I was a kid in the 80s, and the idea of a national id was floated. There was such a huge uproar against it, with the most fringe comparing it to concentration camp tattoos. "everyone will be required to have a bar-code tattooed" and the like.

Then we willingly went and did it. Your phone, computer, any device has a mac address, browser version, update state, tied to an email address, your phone you used to order pizza two months ago, and that email address. All tied to an information store to sell and buy you.

Heh and in the case of these awful dna companies, all tied to buy and sell your genome. Which by their terms of service, they actually own. Yup, you no longer own your own genome if you send them some spit. Contract law is good times....

Oh and in recent news 23andme sold their entire database to an insurance company. Sorry, all of you predisposed diabetics, your rates just went up. yeah data.

good times. but hey, there are shiny pictures on your phone.

whee?
