Thought I'd start it's own thread so we don't spoil anyone in the Lost thread and we can discuss it more in depth.

As Dweller said, it was campy. It didn't grab me as hard as the pilot to Lost did, but it was fun.

I love Walter, Gene the cow, Joshua Jackson's character (Peter?), and the Boston setting (even though it wasn't shot in Boston they did a good job of making it look like the city). I was not expecting John (Mark Valley's character) to be a bad guy. I was expecting him to be kind of an antagonist, trying to convince Olivia not to get involved.

What did you guys think?

I had a few major problems:

1) Sloppy editing - I pointed out most of these while the show was on, but there were many times when the shots simply didn't match up. Watches changed wrists, pillows move mysteriously, people were in some shots and disappeared in the next one, that sort of thing. Sloppy editing is the equivalent of a plot hole in the book, like those times when you realize that a character has just put out their cigarette for the third time without relighting it. It's not a fatal flaw, but it makes you drop out of the story a bit.

2) The floating titles cards - I get where they're coming from with this. They look cool and slick and ultra-modern, but they're annoying. Again, it's something that interrupts the story, making me back out of the fiction completely such that I can only view it distantly.

3) Character arcs - Most of this revolves around the character of Broyles. Supposedly he has a major problem with the show's main character because of a past relationship and that's why he's mean to her, but halfway through the show he totally switches and becomes her cheerleader because she's insubordinate and uses resources without his knowledge. It just doesn't make any sense. I get that he's supposed to be her Cancer Man, but Cancer Man's characterization was a lot more consistent. That said, Broyles is my favourite character.

On the whole, it was a strong first outing, at least as strong as the first X-Files episode, and I'm looking forward to seeing where this is going.

Dweller's point #2 bugged me. I liked the cow. I found it odd that they were talking science for longest time and then just dropped in with - ooh, and then you can share his dreams!

It didn't suck, but I think it's up against Pushing Daisies later in the season.

It bugged you in the sense that it bugged you too, or in the sense that my making that point was bothersome?

I get the feeling that sicence-talk isn't going to be this show's strong suit.

Watching stuff like this with David is incredibly entertaining, as he provides a running commentary on the fancy pseudo-scientific language that they throw around to try and impress viewers.

the thing i liked most about it was having fun identifying all the Toronto locations where it was shot. did you know that the evil corporate headquarters is the Royal Ontario Museum?

otherwise i thought it was okay, but kind of...it's trying really hard to be a sexier X-Files. i'm not sure it really worked.

It looks like only the pilot was shot in Toronto. The rest of the series is shot in Brooklyn, New York.

I don't think so. It's going to be on Tuesdays at 9. Bones is at 8 on Wednesdays against Pushing Daisies.
