Shutter (2008)
Rating of Fury: C-

This poster is the scariest part of the movie. I’m not kidding.

The executive producers of The Grudge and The Ring bring us More Of The Same But Not As Good. Technically, it’s not a bad movie, it’s just not interesting or scary, and I watched this movie alone in an empty movie theater (gotta love $6.50 matinees). Perhaps if Shutter came out before the other Japanese horror remakes I would have rated it higher because it was ‘new’ and ‘fresh’, but I’ve seen all this crap before!

Unlike other Japanese horror remakes, this ghost gal is a hottie.

The mandatory spooky-ass-girl-who-haunts-the-leads is older this time, and the simulacrum ex machina is hammered home in a way that made me wish the director went with more of a Fatal Frame/ Camera Obscura plotline. Upset energies are picked up by cameras and reflections and if they’re strong enough they can affect the living. Sound familiar?

Tweedledum and TweedleF@ckingIdiot.

The Naomi Watts clone and the Johnny Knoxville clone squash a mysterious Japanese girl with their SUV, so they do the logical thing and move to Tokyo so the ghost can haunt them easier. Roll Eyes After 30 minutes, the movie’s dropped enough hints that you can easily deduct what really happened and what’s going to happen, and that makes the film drrrrrrrrrrraaaaaaaggggggggg. There is a small amusing twist at the end of the film, but you have to suffer through the now cliché ending-after-the-ending-because-the-horror-isn’t-over ending to see it. Yawn.

The Naomi clone can’t put the plot pieces together until it’s too late. Dummy.

I really tried to like Shutter, but with the exception of one unexpected shock/ scare, all the frightening stuff was telegraphed or presented in the movie trailer. It was like watching a low-budget Tales From The Crypt and I hoped the payoff at the end was worth sludging through all this. (It wasn’t.)

OMG! MONSTAR! RU-…eh, why bother? Am I out of soda?

Shutter isn’t even worth renting, maybe only if someone else is paying for the rental and driving out for the rental and buying you pizza and beer to watch it. Just maybe. Go watch Ringu again if you want your pants scared off.

Final note:They sell Jeep Libertys in Japan? Why?

Haven't seen it. Although I don't really want to.

The Pirate sheep was proud of its achievements in its short but eventful life; it had refused to follow the herd, stayed away from the baaaaad crowds, until fate had brought it to its calling, as captain of a ship of buccaneer bleaters. Still more impressive, however, was that the sheep was capable of fighting, climbing ropes, and reading a treasure map without use of opposable thumbs.

Swabbing the decks was easy though - it was a built-in functionality.

That's not Naomi Watts?

Edit: Heh, my first guess was actually right, it's the pointless analyst from "Transformers."

Nope, but it could be her sister (with mandatory trout pout duck lips. Damn I think that's a hideous procedure!).

Yeah, but that includes election-time debates, so it's all good.

I think one of the grungier mods *koffAMYkoff* should search through my 20 zillion posts and link all my reviews together. She likes organizing stuff like that.

Just saw Shutter over the weekend, (was hanging with with an ex and her little sister, the sister was in the mood for horror) so I figured I'd post here.

Anyway, the movie does suffer from being pretty predictable. Even without having seen either The Ring or The Grudge, (shocking, I know) a lot of it could be seen coming well in advance. (The appearance of the scuzzy "model finder" in particular is a very obvious clue for the big reveal).

Naomi clone's thickness and inability to suspect very suspicious occasions and behavior is a trifle irritating as well. her thickheadedness was commented on several times by our little party.

There are a couple of appropriately creepy moments, but even with most of those it's possible to guess what's going on. There is one good surprise towards the end with the last Polaroid shot that I didn't see coming, (and explained a few small things from earlier in the movie), but otherwise very much a C rating movie: not good, not bad, mostly just there.
