There has been a lot of new news on the film adaptation of Coraline lately. The first is the reveal of an early poster, as shown on Neil's Journal, which can also be seen here:

The poster is said to be more of a conceptual piece than an actual depiction of what the final film will look like, so it will still be stop motion. I think it did a great job of capturing the feel of the book, and the other mother looks perfectly creepy.

Next, it seems as if Focus Features, which is responsible for some very fine book-to-film adaptations including Vanity Fair and Pride and Prejudice, have picked up distribution rights to the film. You can read the article here. Focus is one of the best independent film distributers out there, so I'm confident they will do a fantastic job with it!

Finally, there has been a major cast change for the role of the other mother. Michelle Pfeifer, who is currently busy at work on another Neil Gaiman movie Stardust, will no longer be voicing the role. Instead, as reported by The Oregonian, she will be replaced by Teri Hatcher, of Desperate Housewives. While I think Michelle Pfeifer would have been perfect for the role, Hatcher should do a fine job.

It looks as if things are starting to take shape and its being handled well! I already can't wait to see it!

Me too... Henry Selick takes apart in "The Nightmare Before Christmas" as a director! Maybe I would like Tim Burton to create Coraline's world but Selick also may be a good choice.

hmmm.... well, the whole feel of it comes off pretty good. the wallpaper is sufficiently ugly and dingy looking. The Other Mother is kinda creepy, but still in the shadows, waiting to really creep you out. Coraline herself looks very sceptical and sarcastic and a wee bit scared, but basically she knows she'll think her way through it, if she keeps her wits.

but I really don't understand the
Oh.

My.

God.

bit... I do rather like the button and the cat in Coraline's name, though.

Don't you believe Teri Hatcher isn't enough "dark" for that role? Perhaps it's because of her character in "Desperate Housewives", but she doesn't sound good as Coraline's mother(s). She looks too sweet and kind.

Isn't it going to be an animated movie, though? I could see Hatcher's *voice* working -- I bet she has a wicked sinister hiss (though admittedly, she wouldn't have been my first choice for the role).

er... there already is a film of Neverwhere - sort of. It originated as a British miniseries thingy and he wrote the book from the script.

That is right, isn't it??

DVD is rent-able through Netflix, if you have access to that service.

I agree. Michelle Pfeiffer would have been better. But Tilda Swinton would've been downright perfect.
