Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds) has signed on to voice the title character in Laika Entertainment's animated feature Coraline, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Henry Selick (The Nightmare Before Christmas, James and the Giant Peach) is writing and directing the film, based on the best-selling novel by Neil Gaiman. Bill Mechanic will produce through his Pandemonium Films along with Laika's Mary Sandell.

The story centers on a young girl (Fanning) who discovers an alternate version of her life after walking through a secret door in her new home. On the surface, this parallel reality is similar to her real life, only much better. The adventure turns dangerous, however, when the girl's counterfeit parents try to keep her forever.

Coraline is in preproduction at Laika, a Portland, Oregon-based animation studio owned by Philip H. Knight.

Heehee! I was talking to an acquaintance yesterday about movies. They mentioned Dreamer, I mentioned MirrorMask, and we both said 'what's that?' to one another. Now the two have fused!

oh c'mon it isn't that bad it's just voice acting. if you can point someone who would be perfect for the role I’ll give you a free cookie.

The king is dead, long live the king.

If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop your story.

To influence a person is to give him one's own soul. He does not think his natural thoughts, or burn with his natural passions. His virtues are not real to him. His sins, if there are such things as sins, are borrowed. He becomes an echo of some one else's music, an actor of a part that has not been written for him. The aim of life is self-development. To realize one's nature perfectly that is what each of us is here for.

"Saccharine sweetness?" Did you see her movie with DeNiro? Granted, that's one movie out of forty or so, but the girl can do a fair bit of actual acting when the situation requires it.

Sounds like an air-con manufacturer from the Mid-West doesn`t she? I accept the girl can act though... Could be the next Alaura?

Nope, I've never seen her in the movie with DiNiro--although I think it's on my Netflix queue. I just can't see it. I'm sorry. I'm not arguing she's isn't a good actress, but there is probably a better (in my mind, mind you) choice out there, somewhere. Just because she's the "it" child actor of the day doesn't mean she's gotta be in everything. I'm just sayin'. Just my opinion.

Awww nooo, I don't have anything against American voices, I really don't, but I was really hoping that they could stay true to the story and cast an English girl. I know most people probably see this as something that isn't important, but I'm always a little bermused by the film industry's need to make foreign characters American and to change the setting to America. It really does leave me thinking "Wha?".
Though her name escapes me right now, I'd choose the lass who plays the test card girl in the rather witty British TV show 'Life On Mars' she has a voice that floats between sweet and a little sinister; seems just right for me Smile
But I guess we can't always have our way, thank the Heavens for subtitles and the mute button :P Just kidding.

I don't mind Dakota Fanning that much, I think she's a pretty good actress, but I do kind of think it should be a British accent.

And yeah, it does seem a bit like she's just been cast because she's the big child actor of the moment.

Seems like a solid choice to me, although I have to agree that it would've been better if they hired an English actress. That's Hollywood for ya.

It's not Hollywood. It's Portland, Oregon.

I like Dakota Fanning as the lead. She has mad skills.

It doesn't really matter if it's just the voice. I don't think Fanning is capable of properly portraying Coraline. She's done great work, mind you, like Man on Fire and whatnot. But this is not her role. Just a little TOO innocent, in my opinion. It would probably come out all fearful and whiny-ish.

I have to say an english voice would give it a lot of class. And there seems to be a very distinctive, educated narrative voice to a lot of English novels and movies that is not present in Western drama.

Yeah Point taken - I work in the film industry in a way and I've heard the reasons...and the problem is there are good unknown actors, but the people forking over the money to get things made proof that their money wont disappear into the void at some point. One of the ways to provide that security is to hire "Reputable" actors. "Reputable" being actors that have an existant fan base and/or proven track record.

I think She can act, but yeah I get tired of her being the only child actor that seems to get the roles...and as far as not being attractive....she seems to bethe only female in hollywood that hasn't been plucked and tucked.
I like her wonky teeth. She seems like a real person rather than a mockette.

I like Dakota Fanning. She's talented for her age, and even more promising, she's 12 already and no drug/alcohol scandals yet. Really, though, I think she'll doo fine. It's just a voice-over role. Anyway, someone on IMDB (curse its name, but I love it) mentioned she was too nice and innocent for such a dark story. It's a dark, creepy story, but the character of Coraline is neither dark nor creepy. She's a normal girl, like Fanning (bar celebrity status). Sticking Dakota onto the cast list is a way of instilling attention and interest while getting a suitable actress for the role.

I've nothing against Dakota Fanning but couldn't they have got an English girl to do the voice? It just seems illogical. I'm sure there are thousands of English actresses who could have done it.
I guess it's the same thing with Claire Daines in Stardust. Nothing against her i thought she did well but it still just seems a bit well, illogical. That's producers for you, they all want a 'name' in there.
