I don't know, maybe it's just me, but that scene was really disturbing. I discussed it with my friends and we have found it to be completely unneccessary. Someone tell me the actual purpose of this scene...?
I liked it, although I can't tell you offhand what the purpose of the scene was. Like many of the Coming to America bits, I found it an evocative, disturbing yet moving vignette, in this case of two immigrants trying to find something to connect to in their new home.
Out of interest: Would you have found it as disturbing or unnecessary if it didn't contain homosexual sex? In what ways did you find the other Coming to America sequences more necessary?

Why are people disturbed by it? are they disturbed by the other little "coming to america stories" too?
Considering American gods is meant to be a big rambling "road movie" of a book then these little distractions are both necessary to the plot and ethos of the book...
Besides that particular story is very good, Salim is a very vulnerable, humancharacter and that the poor bugger gets killed in place of the djin nwhen the war 'starts' shows off Gaiman's superb character construction and knowledge of legends (since the djinn basically tricks salim through his wish)
