Was Shadow's vigil on the world tree really a waste? And I mean that forgetting the trip of self discovery for a moment, did Wednesday deserve a vigil? Perhaps this wasn't just a vigil for Wednesday, but a uber-metaphor, a vigil for all the gods slowly dying the godless America-I feel like that is going to far... All I can say is that a sensed a richness there, with more depth and weight then a personal quest of self discovery.

Definately not a waste. It was the payoff for most of the questions that the reader had. It explained how Shadow fit into the America that was full of gods and demons. It made all of Shadow's other adventures neccessary.

It let Shadow live at last.

It depends what you mean by 'deserve'. I would say Shadow deserved to have the opportunity to keep his deal with Wednesday. Whether any person, god or human, who makes a deal 'deserves' to have the other person's part of the bargain kept is a moot point. Honourable behaviour would say yes, and the heathen gods are keen on holding to honour. |
