escaped convict?

Hi,
I'm rereading American Gods at the moment and have a quick question about a small detail. It's probably obvious, but I missed it.
Why does it say in a few places that Shadow is an escaped convict? Is this because of the murders that Laura committed? But he's not technically an escaped convict because he wasn't convicted for those, and at the start of the books he's released.

His only crime after he is released that anyone knows about is that he has violated his parole by leaving the state. There is no escape, but Mr Town and Mr Road make it seem like that in their conversation with Sam.
