American Gods was my 1st Gaiman (I think I read Sandmen years ago). Good read, and I noticed that Gaiman acknowledged James Branch Cabell and Roger Zelazny as inspirations. The book reminded me more than these of the stuff Tim Powers has been writing for the last 10-15 years. So, if you enjoyed American Gods, you might want to try Tim Powers. My favorite is "Last Call": magical realism, a Fisher King story. Sequels "Expiration Date" and "Earthquake Weather" are also good. Powers uses historic characters in fantastical settings: "The Stress of Her Regard" is a Byron / Shelley / vampire story. His latest "Declare" has the Profumo spy scandal + djinns.

Joe Bob sez, check it out.

Yessir, if you liked AG, you should read Powers. Come to think of it, American Gods *was* pretty close to a Tim Powers outing, but without the goosebumps you get from Powers when you have to keep figuring the connections out for yourself.

Then again, that said (and DO read Powers), I don't recommend that anyone read too many Tim Powers books, they start repeating after a while. But don't miss The Anubis Gates or Last Call or Expiration Date.

I loved this book. Tim Powers is definitely an underappreciated talent. He'll probably be the kind of author who is "discovered" 20 years after he dies.

I think that this book is my favorite Tim Powers book. I totally agree about you get the same eerie feelings from reading Gaiman and Powers.

Tim Powers is a great author, but he is very hit and miss it seems. You have to read the right ones first, or you may be turned off by him.

Anubis Gates is probably the best novel I have ever read. It is close to a perfectly constructed novel, so deep, so much going on yet the flow of the book is amazing. And it feels very much like something Gaimen would write.

Last Call and Drawing of the Dark are also great books, really loved them.

What I mean about hit or miss though is that Last Call, a fantastic book, was 2nd in a trilogy with Experation Date and Earthquake Weather, both of which I didn't care for at all personally. I would recommend reading Last Call first. Dinner At Deviant's Palace was also not that great for me.

a few other simular authors who are fantastic would be Jonathan Carroll and James Blaylock, btw.

Hi folks, AKM here.
The "Black Hats" Stone and Wood seem to me a bunch of renegade operatives who got lost on the July 1947 Corona coverup (75 miles FROM Roswell N.M.) who are in the conflict only for themselves. It is acceptable that Laura dealt them a weak hand. I'm only up to the point in the book where Shadow sees the metal spider but
this is one serious mind trip of a book. Only Jeff Long's "The Descent" a few years ago packs as much of a punch.
Keep locked & loaded,
AKM
