>> I believe Wednesday says something to the effect of giving him the sun to protect him (shadow) but now only the moon is left << No, it was't Wednesday. It was Zorya Polunochnaya herself: "You were given protection once. You were given the sun itself ... All I can give you is much weaker protection. The daughter, not the father. But all helps. Yes?" (p.71, U.S. hardcover edition) I don't know if anyone's brought up the Slavic mythology behind this business yet on this board, but if not: the father of the three Zoryas was a sun god. - Cho (I'm re-reading the story for the third or fourth time - that's why I'm posting on this board so much right now.) |

quote: i have to agree with that. i have read and seen that many relationships are like that )mine being one). it seems one loves the other more and it leaves the person who is loved more feeling a sense of having to do something to make up for their lack of love. |

I dunno. I kinda like her. I mean, sure she's made mistakes and all--primarily cheating on Shadow and such. But, stuff like that happens everyday, you dig? I mean, it just made her character all the more real. So, she was a lousy person in life--lots of people are. Hell, everyone is, at some point in time--just some more than others, is all.
Anyways, I suppose what made me like her was that she'd do anything for him. I mean she did love him. And I thought it was super-saucy how she just showed up at the compound and killed everyone in the joint. (If coming back from the dead and killing lots of people to save the guy you care about isn't love, then what is)? |

I kind of hated luara. But when she would talk to shadow about her haveing sex with robbie, it was kind of funny. At least he didnt bring her back.
Come to think of it what did happan to luara. What power would hell have if those here inprisoned were not able to dream of heaven |

I found her rather interesting... after death.
Do you think the "McCabe" last name was a play of words because "macchabée" in French means corpse you know... I thought so because later Laura as to work on the zombie shift Angelic by Nature; Evil by Necessity |

quote: I suspect, but don't know, that it's a literary reference. I'm currently reading A Lonesome Night in October by Zelazny, which Neil is fond of and is also full of literary references, and there's a McCabe in that as well |

Personally, I was never fond of Laura. I think I despised her by the time the end of the book rolled around. Must have been something to do with the fact she killed Loki. I had just seen the show MaLoki (in which Loki is the Protagonist and it's rather hard to hate him. Hell, it's impossible to hate Loki in it), and he's my favorite diety, so, yah, I held a strong grudge about the killing bit.

In the mythology Loki is the great traitor. And, actually, it's quite fashinating that Odin plans with him - must be the thing about coming from the same place - and even more suprising that Loki dedicates the last battle for Odin. Loke, in the mythology, would love getting the power, but hate letting Odin get that much power also. Loki wouldn't think twice about planning with him, and then betray him.
Now, I might have missed some reason, since it was a while ago I read that part, but if not.. |

Laura was pretty much annoying. I agree that she was out of her place when she said Shadow wasn't really alive. I think that when she continued to call him puppy, as a sign of closeness, even after she did all that crap to him was kind of rude. Overall, I thought she was a bitch.
I can't think of anything witty, humourous, or original enough to say. |

My mind is reeling here... BUT, if Laura is the Moon ie Monday, and there's Wednesday... Who's Tuesday?! I think there are so many hidden layers in this book - I try just to read it, otherwise my brain starts to implode trying to disect the damn thing!

For someone who knows a bit about the old Scandinavian customs it becomes evident, while reading the book, that Shadow's is a cover for the god Balder. Balder's wife is Nanna, who was born a human being but became the goddess of the moon; thus he last name I suppose. But I have really never heard anyone refer to Monday (in scandinavian måndag =literally moon's day) to Nanna's day. Nanna is very unknown god, also to scandinavians.
Tuesday, in Danish tirsdag, in Swedish tisdag, is devoted to the god Tyr, in german mythology referred to as Tiwatz. |

I believe that in some ways that Laura is Shadow's God. At the start of ch.18, he writes: "God is a dream, a hope, a woman, an ironist, a father, a city, a house, etc..." It is what your psyche is directed towards. Shadow's love for Laura keeps her alive. The same love all the other gods were trying to acheive from the people. And in return, Laura helped him out along his journey.
