Mad Sweeney is definitely Philip Seymour Hoffman (sort of in his Cold Mountain role).

Hilary Swank maybe as Sam? Though Sam would be a bit younger, but I imagine her with that sort of masculine-looking face.

Bernard Hill (Theoden in LotR) as Wednesday, but a little bulkier.

Monica Bellucci (Persephone in The Matrix) as Bilquis.

what I'm wondering is why people are casting white girls as sam when she is quite obviously a native American.

But my own list:

Hugh Jackman as Shadow
Jack Nicholson as Wednesday
Matt Damon as Loki
Amanda Aday (from HBO's Carnivale) as Easter
Clea Duvall as Laura
Johnny Depp as Mad Sweeney

And I'm sure I'll think of others...

I think Brad Pitt would make a good Shadow.

Christopher Walken would make an excelent Wednesday because he's got that smooth grifter charm, but at the same time if he was pissed off his voice would turn into that growl.

Don Cheadle as Mr Jacquel

Linda Fiorentino as Laura

Shannon Sossamon as Sam

Jim Carrey as Chad (the Sheriff od Lakeview, or Lakeside, whatever)

That old guy from Tales from the Crypt Demon Night as Hinzelman

Morgan Freeman as Mr Nancy

Vincet D'Onforio as Mr. Ibis

Does anyone else think that Al Pacino would make a perfect Wednesday? After recently watching The Devil's Advocate again, it hit me that he IS Wednesday. Even if the looks aren't exactly right, he's still PERFECT. The cunning charm, persuasiveness, everything. His role in The Devil's Advocate is remarkably similar to Odin/Wednesday as well.

>> Brad Pitt <<

Although he's moderately tall (I've heard 6 ft to 6 ft 1 inch), I don't think he's tall enough for everyone to remark on, as they do with Shadow. And he's whiter than white - Shadow's mom, with her sickle cell anemia, was probably African American. And I just don't think he can play that deadpan dead-inside image that Shadow needs - Pitt always looks pouty and petulant to me when he's unhappy.

So no Brad Pitt, even if he does share my real life last name.

Shannon Sossamon looks too model-ish and not Native American enough for Sam (although it seems she's part Native Hawaiian). Maybe this lady, named Crystle Lightning?

She played Native American soldier Lori Piestewa (killed in the Iraq War) in a TV special about Jessica Lynch.

Morgan Freeman is too big and imposing to be scrawny, wily little Mr. Nancy.

Of course, he would have to be aged, but I'm seeing Don Cheadle as Mr. Nancy. He definitely is the right wiry build.
I'm also going with Wallace Shawn as Chernoborg. I'm basing that on his role in Uncle Vanya.

NEVER COMING TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU:

Shadow: Jason Stratham (The Transporter)-Somehow I got the impression that Shadow starts out w/a buzz in the beginning of the story.

Wednesday: Oliver Reed (think Gladiator) r.i.p.

Laura: either Jennifer Connolly or Naomi Watts-depends if you want dark or light-either would be nice with Jason

Loki: Willem Defoe-his face can be so mercurical

Zoyra (sp): Cate Blanchett (aged)-she has that ethereal pale fragile-but-really-made-of-steel thing going on. The Redgrave sisters can play her sisters.

Czernobog: Robin Williams-You have to be pretty sturdy to wallop a herd of cattle day in and day out

Eoestre: Monica Belluci or Angelina Joie (it's all in the lips)

Mr. Nancy: Garrett Morris (old seasons of SNL-he would have the comedic timing for the role, and he's skinny as hell)

Tech Boy: little Jackie Osbourne

Girl Sam: I'm having problems with this one-the closest I can get is a young Demi Moore with the hair she has now. She can look like she has some Indian blood in her. Maybe Rachel Leigh Cook.

Because of the cast, locations, and effects, it'll be horribly expensive to make.

Ed Norton as Loki.... he's, as i posted in the other "movie" thread, very "Loki" in Rounders.

Actually, watch Rounders anyways, it's a great movie.

Even if they did make a movie, wouldn't some of the best scenes from the book just look rediculous on screen? For example, how would they make a raven talk without it looking really, really fake and crappy? We ALL hate live action movies where animals talk.

Ravens are very smart birds - I should think that a good trainer could easily get it to open and shut its beak on cue, and then it just needs some adroit dubbing.

Or the Raven could caw, and Shadow could understand it while we the viewers get subtitles.

Frankly, I'd be more worried about the "behind the scenes" scene. How to get that across to someone who hadn't read the book ...

Mad Sweeney has to be a real Irishman!

My vote is Brendan Gleeson (Monk McGinn - Gangs of New York). If fact, when you think about it, Liam Neeson as Loki, Danile Day Lewis as Shadow and cameron Diaz as Sam.

But Wednesday has to be Antoney Hopkins.

Deman, I love all your ideas - especially Anthony Hopkins as Wednesday - except Cameron Diaz as Sam. Sam's like, 20! And..not blonde, and wayy to innocent for Diaz.

I'm gonna get on the 'Vin as Shadow' bandwagon here...I think he's got the look (tan 'im up a bit) and the voice...and really, I think he would 'get it'...the man's a fantasy/sci-fi buff after all! I bet he's a Gaiman fan actually...

As for Wednesday...I haven't read *every* post on here...but has anyone mentioned Al Pacino?
Think about it: he's got that wolfish grin that keeps on popping up with Wed, and he can really pull off the rapid swings form one emotional extreme to the other.

Another thought...Mr. Nancy...what about the actor that played Cat on Red Dwarf? I dunno how old he is now...but age can be faked right? I think the actor (outside the Cat role) would be great at finding that middle ground between serious and michevious.

Hmmm...Hale Berry as Bast? A certain, recent, unmentionable movie not withstanding...it would be a neat little cameo role for her...

Hmmm...I like the Natalie Portman as Sam idea...

And Christopher Walken as Czernobog is perfect...

Oh...Loki...what about Willem DaFoe? Some one mentioned him as Weds...but I think he'd be a GREAT Loki...witness his Green Goblin...

Mio Jovovich as Laura...perfect. She's got the right look, and I think she could play dead pretty well.

I want Steve Buscemi as Heinzelmann...Neil keeps referring to H's 'goblin face'...and if Steve doesn't have a goblin face...I don't know who does!

Aaand I just read the post by Farytail52 about Pacino...so I'm glad I'm not alone!

Ok then seeing as though everyone is posting there cast, i'll post mine. Can't hurt can it?

I will only post for the look of the person, not the acting ability:

Shadow - Steven Segall *Under Seige

Wednesday - Mick Hucknall aka Simply Red *Singer

Chad Mulligan - David Hewlett *Cube

Hinzleman - Richard Farnsworth *Straight Story

Nancy - John Witherspoon *Friday

Ibis - Gary Oldman *Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

Jackal - Guy Pearce *Ravenous

Loki - Jason Flemming *Lock Stock (short hair)

Laura - Patricia Arquette *Lost Highway

Czernobog - Albert Finney *Miller's Crossing

That'll do bored now. I'm pretty sure no-one had these same pictures in their head but I was bored - er before so I wrote them.

And I hate to say it! But I would like to see the actor who played the 'Architect' in the matrix audition for role of Wednesday. I not a huge fan of that series of flicks, but it isn't the poor unknowning actors fault.

the guy teaches at the acting school across the street from my university. want me to ask him?

a neat little cameo that would remind people of a movie everybody hated?
nothing against Halle Berry, but i'm thinking she's going to want to stay away from cats for a loooooonnnnngggggg time
(BTW, in Sandman i wondered why Bast never mentioned Catwoman as a source of worship. seems pretty obvious to me)

Have you seen the trailers/ads for, "Bride & Prejudice"? What about that stunning girl who's the lead as Bast? Especially with those light eyes of hers.
