That girl in Bride & Prejudice is Aishwarya Rai.

She was Miss World, among other things. I agree that she's both stunning and exotic.

You are a Confectioner. Who can take a sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Actually, that's Bob The Enchanter, two doors down on the left. But you make delectable treats, which is no simple feat considering Oompa Loompas won't be invented for three centuries. Not only do you delight with your sweets, but you've paved the way for a new profession: dentistry!

yes, i am of the school that x-men would have not done bad at all without her.

yah... i guess anything that connects her with elemental forces and/or cats will reflect badly. first time somebody says anything about storm gods things are fucked....
hmmmm... good X-Men actors... Alan Cumming and Ian McKellan need to be in the movie. McKellan would make an awesome god

I agree to some extent about Anthony Hopkins as Wednesday, but I also think that Gene Hackman might be able to make a decent attempt. Think of a much darker Royal Tenenbaum.

When I read the book I instantly imagined Wednesday as Rip Torn.

Czernobog had me thinking from the first of Jean Reno. A little gray in the closed cropped hair and a bit of work on the accent and it would be perfect.

Mr Nancy should be an unknown. A small, thin guy.

Shadow would be hard. Putty is just to funny. Go to be serious, cool, dangerous. Be able to say "my name is Shadow" without sounding corny.

I have to say, I would go for The Rock over Vin Diesel as Shadow. He's totally the right size and he's who I envisioned while reading (though I wish he was seen as more intelligent, because Shadow to me seemed extremely intelligent (and less Thor-like, as a result).

Well I do not know who should play Anasi (maybe another bollywood male actor?) but whoever it is would be in a good position for a sequel since he is obviously in the next book.

O cmon people, Laura deserves a young and beautiful actress. actually I think it should be someone with black hair, y´know. I never imagined Laura with the common kind of beauty (Blonde and so); I always thoutgh seh was more...exotic, yeah. But easter would be fine with red hair what do you think?

All right My opinion is this (other than Laura, This is what I had pictured the characters since I first read the book):

Vin Disel as Shadow
John Glover(The guy who plays Lionel Luthor in smallville) as Wednesday
Aishwarya Rai as Laura
Jean Reno as Czernobog

Blah, Blah, Blah!!!

Oh yeah, And I think Neil Gaiman is perfectly able of directing his own stuff. (well, as long as it is not like that neverwhere crap. A good book fuck up by a crappy indy-like flick.)

FYI: Neverwhere was originally written for the BBC television broadcast. Only later did Neil expand it into a novel.

why is everyone going on about Vin Diesel and the Rock? i can't say how much i hate both of them. they're just so damn ugly. i'd NEVER watch any movies with them in. i never had a clear picture of shadow, but it was definetly nothing ugly like that.

i think Johnny Depp would be perfect as Shadow. it's definetly 'his kind of role'. strange, silent outsider.

other cast:
Johnny Depp as Shadow (Joaquin Phoenix would maybe fit too)
Anthony Hopkins as Wednesday
Viggo Mortensen as Loki (he made a good lucifer in the prophecy)
Christopher Lee as Odin
Charlize Theron as Laura
Horst Buchholz would have been a good Hinzelmann, but he's dead. Maybe Mario Adorf, but he's too nice. has definetly to be a german actor.
John Rhys-Davies or Robbie Coltrane as Czernobog

for all others i think unknown Actors would be the best choice.

For those who mentioned Vin Diesel as Shadow I just want to know if any of you have actually seen him act or just think he looks the part... Diesel is a terrible actor and should not only be kept far away from American Gods, but any Gaiman story ever.

Del Toro was a better choice, although I think he's 6'5" which is a little too tall I think. But Brad Pitt could do it, and to those who said he's not bald I want to let you in on a secret little invention they call a razor, that can magically make anyone bald.

I like Sean Connery as Wednesday only for one reason... and that is because no matter who you were trying to sell me, I couldn't see any other 60+ year old guy attracting 16/17 year old girls (I actually know 16 year olds who are attracted to Connery), personally I thought sleeping with virgins was a VERY big part of his character... Wednesday really needs sex appeal and I wouldn't feel it with any other actor.

I love the Idea of Jack Black as the fat kid in the Limo...
Tim Roth would play an amazing Loki...
Walkin would be a good Czernobog, but I would like to see the aging Gene Wylder if he was physically up to it.
