Actually I can understand people suggesting The Rock even though Shadow is, well, more of a Shadow character. He is silent and reserved but physically imposing.

If anybody would be a stretch for the part it would be Johnny Depp physically. Shadow's character is physically opposing and tall and while I definitely don't doubt Depp's acting chops physically he just doesn't fit.

I'm shocked that only person seems to agree with me in 13 pages, when I say Paul Newman (particularly in his 'The Colour of Money' days) should be Wednesday.

If not, I can also see Robert Redford or Michael Douglas as Wednesday.

Finally, Alan Cumming should be playing Loki link

Vin Diesel should never be allowed near a script for American Gods, he should have a 50 foot barge pole strapped to his front to prevent him from even coming close.

Shadow is a complex character with obscure and particular motivation.

Vin Diesel is a one dimensional action hero.

No go

Not at all.

For sam the actor should definitely be that girl from 'Lost in translation' and girl with a Pearl earring. I forget her name.

I agree with Anthony Hopkins for Wednesday too.

What happened to British actors?

Guys, posting images are fine, but try not to post images larger than the screen (Mr. Tricks, I edited your post because of that), especially as avatars (Sian, I took off your avatar because of that)
Otherwise, keep having fun

I'm new 2 this board, so I'm not sure if anyone's mentioned this. I always pictured Jack Nicholson as Wednseday - you could see him get the younger girls, see him pull of the scams, see him playing the old geezer when neccesary. As for the other characters, who-ever mentioned Steve Buccenni as Loki is spot on, and as for Shadow, Vin Diesel may be the only person to do it. Most of the stuff he has done is trash - he's in a complete pigeonhole right now and is probably trying to make a living out of it. But he can act, to a point. And shadow dosn't need too much acting - thats for the gods. He can play a spectator for the most part, just following the route like in the book. On the other hand, if he's in it some Executive producer might decide the film would sell better as an action film. Which would truly be hell......................

huh. I stumbled back across this site today, first time in FOUR YEARS.
That said, I would like to issue a public apology for ever thinking Vin "The Pacifier" Diesel was ever worth any salt. I was basing it on his performance in Boiler Room, I promise....

So let's recast Shadow as.... Well, Depp and Christian Bale are too easy (although both would be good) howzabout Ed Norton?

What about Viggo Mortensen as Shadow? He's not too white, he's big, he looks strong. Or is there too much Aragorn in him to be Shadow?

Ok... I'm thinking Ben Browder as Shadow
Jack Nicholson as Sweeney
gigi Edgley as Bastet
Liam Neison as Wednesday
Johnny Depp (or perhaps Wayne Pygram) as Loki
...and that's as far as I've thought out

You are an Illuminator. You add color and beauty to anything you can get your hands on: books, tavern signs, clocks, small barnyard animals. While your work goes largely unappreciated, at least it pays the bills. Why, that enormous golden M you painted for the new Scottish restaurant down the street netted you a farthing!

Neil said this at the signing:
'In an alternate universe where Vin Diesal could act and had hair, Shadow would be him." he went on to talk about Wedensday being based on Rip Torn, who he met on the set of some movie.. Torn had the scariest smile he'd seen, and based Wedensday on him

I'm a late replier on this Smile
First off.. I really hope if AG ever gets made into a movie, the cast satisfies everyone - for me, the cast being wrong would massively spoil the entire movie and disappoint me enormously. So I pray to all the Gods that there are that Vin Diesel or any other muscly dumb guys don't get cast as anyone in the movie.
So..
Wednesday - A lot of people are saying Sean Connery about Wednesday, but I don't think Sean Connery has a Wednesday-ish sort of charm. Connery is charming, but not in a rogueish, ruthless enough way. For me, the most perfect Wednesday in the world would be David Caruso (the redhead guy off CSI Miami). He just looks so Wednesdayish to me, and talks just like I imagine Wednesday would took like. Also, people were saying that whoever it was needed to be of appeal to young/virginal girls too - well, I'm 16, and David Caruso's hot enough for me Smile
Shadow - Shadow's difficult Frown I would cast him as Hugh Jackman, because he can pull off the big muscly tough guy thing that Shadow has going for him (like he did when he played Wolverine), but he can also attribute other facets - the Hugh Jackman in Swordfish was very different to the Hugh Jackman in X-Men.)
I like the idea of Tom Waits as Czernoborg - OR as Mad Sweeney. Steve Buscemi definitely has to have a part in the movie - maybe as Mad Sweeney.
I'd really like Bilquis to be Monica Bellucci - she could pull it off perfectly, just seems to ooze femeninity.
The rest, I'm not really sure about. Though I think Rachel Weisz MIGHT make a good Laura..

I and my mates have been casting this movie for quite some time now... and we've yet to come up with a decent Shadow...

But the perfect Wednesday in our book is Gene Hackman... With Nick Nolte as my personal 2nd choice... but if I were making another Jaws movie, I'd cast Nick to play the shark

:-)

I am not sure on the rest but I am postive on this:
Shadow: Bencio del toro
Mr. Nancy: Morgan freeman or type
I am not so sure on this but for some reason I had a Burl Ives type man in my head for wensday
somebody else mentioned Steve Bucsimi for mad sweeney and I totally agree.
maybe christopher walken for Czernoborg but a little older
