First Post and its for a movie cast. This is what I saw while reading. A reason for why when I feel they apply. Also I feel each one of these people (unless I am horribly wrong) is still living and more than capable of playing the part.
Shadow - The Rock - Body builder, can look the native american part mentioned by Sam and Whiskey Jack, and unlike Vin Deisel can actually act. Odin - Anthony Hopkins or Dennis Hopper Czernobog - Christopher Walken Bilquis - Monica Bellucci (Is there anyone else better for this part?) Sam - Natalie Portman - If you have ever seen the movie Garden State she plays that part and executes it perfectly. Laura - Rachael McAdams - I decided this after Laura visits Shadow in the grave yard in Lakeside. Shadow mentions the smile that melts his heart everytime. Rachael McAdams is the only actress that can do that for me today. Loki - Steve Buscemi Mr. Nancy - Morgan Freeman Buffalo - James Earl Jones Sherriff of Lakeside - Nathan Fillion Those are all the people I saw as I was reading. Some of them changed to who they are now as the story went one but if I was casting director those would be my first choices for the parts. |

understand zebra's, i'd like to welcome you to the board and thank you for joining in, but Hotlinking is not allowed here.
we'd love you to stay and contribute to the board, but could you read our FAQ's first. if you have any specific questions you can direct them to the moderators, which would be myself, aitapata and dweller in darrkness, who would all be happy to help you. ~ I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not. the parrot... ...gets tiresome. the parrot... ...i ate him. I like the idea of Clive Owen as Shadow and Ian McKellan as Mr. Wednesday.

I think Clive Owen was a good idea for Shadow, however whenever I read this novel I always see Jeffery Dean Morgan as Shadow, yes he's a bit older than Shadow, but he can really play the silent tough guy well, plus he's bulked up for his Watchmen role so he's got the muscles for it.
As for Wednesday, that's a difficult one. but i think Bill Murray is an interesting idea, i think he could bring a playfullness to the role that is definitley there in the novel. |

hey,
its my first post so hi to all on forum. Ive seen a lot of names and actually cool choices here, but in my opinion this film could use its own stuff - I mean I would never use Brad Pitt or Natalie Portman, because then it wouldnt be American Gods - book and film of Neil Gaiman anymore, it would become just the next Brad Pitt film, oh yeah, all the cheering fans around. I think this story deserves better than that. Unknown actors could deliver a good film too. and I agree on the delay with NG. without the right director i would be nothing - just look at what Twilight has become. or the Golden Compass. totally out of its original style. best, Mozenrath |

The whole time I was reading it, I was picturing Ray Stevenson from Rome as Shadow. I think it could work...

I haven't gotten it all figured out yet (haven't finished the book) but I would cast Clive Owen as Shadow and Jack Nicholson as Mr. Wednesday.

I, like a bunch of others, made a user here so I could put up my thoughts on a possible cast, and my choices are for acting ability (That is, the way I think that they'd play the character) and for there looks but I'm leaning more on the former if anything; but both are important.
Shadow --> Benicio Del Toro - I think he'd kick major ass in this role. Zorya P. --> Scarlett Johansson - She's supposed to be young, Shadow describes her as having an unlined face, dark eyes, and long lashes. Plus, white hair. (Pg. 87) Mr. Wednesday --> John Malkovitch - I agree with the people who suggested him. I think that He'd do a stupendous job. His demeanor is perfect--I think. Mad Sweeney --> Jason Statham - He'd definitely have to change his accent and do hair. He's not a shoe-in for the role but I think he could pull it off. I can totally see him drinking himself to death on purpose.. Laura --> Jennifer Connelly - This role ought to be in the bag with her. She's exactly how I saw her in my head. I totally pictured her with black hair. Plus she can pull off "dead-pan". She's pretty but not in that super conventional way. Czernobog --> Christopher Walken - I think he'd do very well as Czernobog--Plus I can totally see him talking about hitting cows (then Shadow) in the head with a hammer. Can't you? Mr. Nancy --> Samuel L. Jackson - Yellow rubber gloves? Yes. Talking about high titties and big balls. Hell yes! He's also in the bag, in my opinion. At first I too thought of Morgan Freeman, but I think that Sammy is a faaaaar better choice. Mr. Ibis --> Morgan Freeman - Now here is where Mr. Freeman fits better. The ethnicity is right to be playing the sort of black/Egyptian man. I think so anyway. --- I have not finished the book yet but this is my opinion so far. Though I'm having a tough time finding a couple of ladies to do the Older Zorya's. I saw Zorya U. as the oldest looking (around her mid to late sixties) and then Zorya V. as sort of late fifties. Obviously Zorya P. is the youngest and looks it. |

i always pictured dominic purcell as shadow. he fits the tough but smart guy persona without being a pretty boy, and hes a good actor. jeremy irons would be perfect for wednesday. hes a great actor and he has that awesome gruff voice and creepy smile. also i think elya baskin would be a perfect czernobog, rachel mcadams would be perfect as laura, and ben kingsley could play mr. ibis. And for some reason i cant get sam l. jackson out of my head for nancy. I do like the idea of james earl jones as the buffalo but i think his voice would be too recognizable. hugo weaving would be better. i was very surprised at how many people had the same people in mind, specifically shadow and laura.
the quickest way is spmetimes the longest. |

Whoaa, I think I was way off with the way I pictured Shadow. Whoops. I didn’t seen him as Vin Diesel or The Rock or an action star at all. I didn’t even think he was supposed to be that muscular really, just very tall and intimidating and vaguely young looking (didn’t people at the jail constantly ask him how he stayed so youthful?)
Sooo my perfect choice would be Adrien Brody. He’s a very tall man but not exactly in-your-face-I-am-BIG. It’s more like after you’ve spent half of an hour looking at him you realize how tiny the chair he’s sitting in looks compared to the rest of him. That’s what I thought Shadow was like. Normal-man-looking with a little dash strange and eerie. |

Shadow = Vin Diesel
I know people have been saying he can't act but I think the reason for that is he usually takes simelar roles and perhaps if he was given a role like this he could show us all how good actor he could be. Loki/Mr world = Barry Pepper I always imagined him as barry and hes a great actor and good looking too. Mr Wednesday = Sir Ian Mckellen or David Bowie!! If he could do an american accent he'd be perfect. Mr Nancy = Morgan Freeman Girl-Sam = I always thought an unknown or upcoming actress would be best for samm and shes a really wacky character and it could be a breakthrough role for an unknown actress. Laura = Christina Ricci maybe? She could pull off the dead look and shes really pretty. Mr Jaquel = Samuel L Jackson Mad Sweeney = Sean Bean (Only taller and although it says in the book he didnt have an irish accent i think in the film he should because i always pictured him with this drunk irish voice) Zorya P = Monicca Bellucci. Shes beautiful and although irl shes in her 40s...she could be anywhere between 25 and 50. she has an ageless face. Czernobog = Christopher Walken Hes simply terrifying Mabel = Queen Latifah (cant spell) Easter = Bonnie Hunt Media = Paris Hilton Harry BlueJay = Macaulay Culkin Fat kid in limo = Devin Ratray The only one im really stuck on is Ibis because I can picture him so clearly in my head and yet i cant place an actor to that image. I know it's crooked...But its the only game in town |

I hope they do make this movie. By the way, Vin Diesel would be absolutely horrid as shadow. First of all Shadow must be white, and dark haired. There are clues in the book that suggest that Shadow is actually supposed to be an incarnation of Baldur, which would make him both pale in complexion and have dark hair. (Read Monarch of the Glen, basically reveals he's Baldur)
It would definitely have to be someone unknown, can't really think of anyone off hand who fits the looks. Shadow has to be somewhat aloof, not moody and badass(like vin diesel, or bruce willis) His whole point in the book is (and he says this) nothing shocks him since he found out Laura cheated on him. That's his whole character, he's introverted, and in his own world. Almost like Lennie from "Of Mice and Men" though not mentally challenged, or that simple I suppose. He is just a man who's lost his place in the world since he lost laura. But please stop saying Vin Diesel, that insults the character completely, he's not that way at all. You know... now that i think about it Gerry Butler might be alright Remember, Shadow is a tragic character, not a bad ass. I just thought, Viggo Mortensen in Lord of the Rings, that's the attitude that I think best describes Shadow. That Sadness about Viggo in LOTR would be the best character study for anyone wishing to be Shadow. For the others: Sir Richard Attenborough would be brilliant, though he may be too old at this point, but in his Jurassic Park days, he would've been perfect, though he may be too small. Michael Gambon might be good, he's got the cheekiness, and size I think. Morgan Freeman would be a great Nancy, he probably just couldn't be as laid back. Joss Ackland would be the best choice for Czernobog. Czernobog also needs to be a larger man due to the fact he bludgeoned cows to death for a living with a hammer, takes a big man to do that, especially with one hit as he claimed to do often. Joss ackland may not be that big, but he carries himself like a big man (remember him in Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey and Lethal Weapon 2?) Tim roth as loki is brilliant or Jackie Earle Hailey, because he was supposed to be a redhead and he was great in Watchmen Mad Sweeney couldn't be Steve Buscemi, the book describes him as being nearly Shadows size, and steve buscemi is a waify little guy. Tex Cobb would be awesome, but he's probably too old (think Raising Arizona) or Ray Winstone I've wracked my brain for Laura, she'd have to be an unknown too probably, I imagine her being a blonde. Maybe Alison Lohman, but she's probably not that good. a young Naomi Watts maybe Sam Blackcrow would either have to be Christina Richi, or even that girl in that Paper heart movie Chrlyne Yi. Those are probably the main ones, Most others like Ibis and Jacquel would best be served as unknowns me thinks, most of this movie would do well with unknown actors That's just my opinion at least. |

More evidence that Shadow would be white, and not mixed, Wednesday preffered Pale women with Light hair. Every girl he hit on/had sex with was light skinned. Being that he is norse, of course he would prefer that, he would search the world for all the women that looked like the ones that used to worship him. Would make him feel worshipped again, plus he was trying to sire children that could pull this whole con off for him.
