as Shadow?! Do you mind if I hunt you down and kill you? He does need to give the impression he has more than two braincells to rub together.

I think Billy Zane would actually be a good person for the part of Shadow. He's big, buff, and pretty tan. And he's not a bad actor.

If I recall, Shadow had little trouble in prison because he was big enough and looked "don't fuck with me" enough. Tall, dark, BIG, and handsome, but not in a pretty-boy way. Not sure what current actor epitomizes those qualities...

I think Bruce Willis is a bit too old, and I'm not real crazy about V Diesel or Billy Zane; I'm just not sure.

Hey, how about we put Johhny Depp on steroids for a year or two and give him a few scars? Then he'd be perfect! Hey, hey, I'm kidding, I'm a kidder...

Eeeep.

i ever thought Wendsday as a tall guy. Ive always thought someone small with a big head and a big smile would be better.... like Joe Pantoliano (Matrix, Memento)

As someone else mentioned, hope you don't mind me jumping in(first post as it were.) I was reading all of the other dream casts and got to thinking that I'd quite like to see Mark Dacascos as Shadow. He played Mani in *Brotherhood of the Wolf* in case the name doesn't sound familiar. He's got the look, though he probably isn't tall enough. So, slap some lifts in his shoes and I believe he'd be wonderful. I can kinda see Jean-Rhys Davies(sp?)as Mad Sweeny. I'd have to seriously think for the others.

Pardon me for coming late into this discussion (my local bookstore barely got the AG paperback last week, and I just finished it). Anyway I'd love to contribute my idea for a few roles for an AG film...

Shadow - Hugh Jackman (Vin Diesel my ass!)

Wednesday - Donald Sutherland (he just seems perfect for that role)

Laura - Helena Bonham Carter (she can look quite good being dead...)

Loki - Steve Buscemi (although I have to say Tim Roth is equally qualified for this part)

Hinzzelman - Gegory Peck... if he still acts...

I like Del Toro as Shadow.
And I was thinking Brian Dennehey for Wednesday too.
Laura: Laura San Giacomo
Sam: Kate Hudson
Chad: Phillip Seymore Hoffman
Loki: Mark Rolston (The head of the Sisters in the Shawshank Redemption)
Queen of Sheba: Carrie Ann Moss
Easter: Michelle Pfiefer

As for directors, I think Guillermo Del Toro could rock this movie. He did Blade 2 and currently working on Hellboy.

Somebody suggested Michelle Pfeiffer for Easter. Please can I veto that decision. Easter is sposed to be curvy and voluptuous. If Pfeiffer were to try voluptuous, she's just look out of proportion. In Utopia, though, she could be beautifully played by Marilyn Monroe, everyone's favourite curvy blonde.

Definitely go with the idea of either Bruce Willis or Billy Zane as Shadow, although isn't Zane a bit too conciously goodlooking.

Also, please ditch the idea of Helena Bonham-Carter. What about Carrie-Ann Moss for Laura though. She's manage the Urd's Well water scene with aplomb and dignity, which Bonham-Carter wouldn't.

Just a few thoughts, be gentle with me..... wink

heh, that would be worth it just to see him stuck on that tree weak and dying, for making such sucky movies.

okay, done bitching, for now,

who's that actor that usually plays hitmen? eek, i had his name, and now i can't remember his name, or anything he's been in...hmph

but when i remember, he'd be a good shadow..

I can definitely see Patricia Arquette as Laura (although her voice gets on my nerves sometimes) but I think Fairuza Balk is way too pretty for Sam. I was thinking a kind of butch and younger-looking Salma Hayek. Hmm ... maybe the little girl from "The Prophecy" only like, not so little?

you know what? he's not bald. but i think ever since mr. gaiman answered the "what's shadow look like?" question with something like "he looks like vin diesel but with more hair" people keep getting this mental pic of diesel but simply leaving out the hair part.

Here we go:

Shadow - Vin Diesel (yes, a lot of you don't
like him and think he's way too
"macho" but it does say in the book
he looks very "don't fuck with me"
and who else but diesel has that
going for him? as for the "easy
going" part of shadow, i always
thought that although he looks mean
he has this low-key, easygoing-ness
to him)

Wednesday - Christopher Walken

Loki - Tim Roth or James Marsters (LOVE him!)

Laura - Jennifer Connelly

Sam - MAYBE Eliza Dushku (bite me!)

Bast - Salma Hayek (like in Dust till Dawn)

Mad Sweeney - Tim Buscemi

Fat Kid - SO a fattened Seth Green

and that's pretty much everyone i can think of right now.

So what was going on in the world when American Gods came out? Why is it that so many of us automatically pictured Vin Diesel when reading the book? I didn't know any other Gaiman fans, online or off, and never discussed it with anyone so I couldn't have gotten the idea from anyone else. Meanwhile, Neil mentions in his blog that his son Mike mentioned that he immediately saw Shadow as Vin Diesel as well, and Neil's response was "Who?"

It's just odd, because I've never seen so many people automatically picture the same actor for a role. There's usually so much variance in what people imagine. And it's doubly strange in this case, because Diesel is not exactly a well-known guy. He's relatively new to the scene and hasn't been in that much.

In response to those who say he's too macho for the role and that he'd make things too much like an action flick, I disagree. I first saw Diesel in The Boiler Room, where he played a stock broker, not an action role, and he did a great job of playing a tough businessman with an underlying good heart and sensitivity.

And besides, he's hot.

Shadow: Nick Cage or an unknown American Indian actor.

Wednesday: Jim Broadbent

Loki: Robert Partick (Doget X-Files, T1000 in Terminator 2)

Laura: Linda Hamilton, Or someone with a kind of spooky awe about them. I have a mental picture of Laura but just can't find the actress to match it.

Easter: Uma Thurman. Watch The Truth about Cats and Dogs and tell me shes not perfect for this role.

Czernoborg: Edward Norton. Watch him in American History X where he plays a different role to his more recent ones.

Mr Nancy: Morgan Freeman
