It's weird, but the main character of a book is often the character you know the least about, or can visualize the least,
since you see everything through his or her eyes.
Laura- Anne Hathaway. She's perfect.

Mad Sweeney- Colin Farrel

Sam- Natalie Portman? I dunno, maybe.

Yeah, she'd be good.
Anansi- Tim Reid, maybe, but he's not quite short enough and somehow I can't imagine him talking about "high-titted women".

Czernobog- Jack Nicholson, if he can do an Eastern European accent.

Technical Boy- Marcus Toji
Or Jack Osbourne. Can he act? *shrug* Come to that, Jack
Osbourne would make a very good Tech Boy if he can do an American accent.
Loki- Either that guy with pink hair from the Leonardo Dicaprio "Romeo and Juliet" (who is that guy anyway?), or Johnny Depp.
I can just see
him as the god of chaos after I saw him screaming "f***er!" at a fish in that Don Quixote movie...
Easter- Kirstin Dunst would be great.

Media- Cameron Diaz maybe? Katie Couric would be funny if she could act. I don't know if she can. *shrug*

Shadow - Vin diesel - maybe he could pull it off, but probably not the best choice, maybe an unknown should be cast for the part

Wednesday - Robert de Niro, Al Pacino or Ian Mckellen

Loki - Christopher Walken, Gary Oldman

Czernobog - Sean Bean

Sam - Franka Potente

Easter - Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Palthrow

Vin Diesel is too obviously the choice for Shadow. He's got the body, the racial ambiguity, and the talent, and just because he's usually bald doesn't mean he can't do it. There are wonderful things being done with wigs these days!

Also, the Rip Torn idea for Wednesday is perfect too but I think a lot of other actors could play Wed, unlike Shadow who is begging to much to be played by Vin.

Everyone else is a toss up.

As for directors? M. Night Shyamalan comes to mind. Also Peter Jackson and Ang Lee, but only because I like them right now. A big no to Steven Spielberg, who could do a great job but wouldn't have enough respect for the property. (Shadow can't be played by Tom Cruise. He deserves a good actor!)

--Ryuu wishes he were played by Vin Diesel.

wow - my first post here. i've been lurking for a week or so . . .

i don't have a whole cast worked out. just a few i think would be perfect.

wednesday - richard attenborough (the old guy from jurassic park. i always pictured him while i was reading - imagine him during the ATM grift)
laura - edie falco (i know she's a little old, but she's got the perfect face for it)
bast - salma hayek
bilquis - natashia williams (shane from she-spies)
easter - the mom from "dharma & greg" (i can't find her name)
tech kid - jack osbourne (no explanation necessary. i loathe him, but he looks perfect for it)

that's all for now . . . the others a still a little foggy

Shadow - Vin Diesel (a la Boiler Room and Iron Giant); I just could not picture anyone else right from the moment I began reading - and all my friends agree, which is odd.

Wednesday - Rip Torn, yes!

Odin - I totally agree with Max Von Sydow

Laura - Emily Watson

Loki - Bruce Campbell

Nancy - Scatman Crothers was just there in my mind the whole time; as he's dead, I could see Danny John Jules (Cat from red Dwarf)

Bast - Angela Bassett

Unknowable God - Robert Carlyle

Mr Jaquel - Robert Picardo wouldn't go away

Mr Ibis - Bob Peck

I always thought of Sam as a sort of young Joan Jett.

I still think it's kind of silly to try and make a book like this into a movie. I mean, think how bad it could be, even with a great cast. I think that if this book would have made a good movie, Mr. Gaiman would have written a screenplay. Or a comic book. But, if it had to be made into a movie, these would be my choices:

Vin Diesel does make a certain amount of sense, except I never imagined Shadow with that gruff a voice. I think people just say him because he is muscular. You need someone strong in more than just physique. I have really no idea.

Wednesday has to be able to be a con man one moment and the all-father god who hung from a tree for however many days it was the next. Someone very talented, like maybe Al Pacino, or Jeremy Irons. also difficult to call.

Loki has to be both a convict doing time in prison and a trickster god. Also has to appear experienced and smart. I can almost see Gearge Clooney, if he could just add more menace to his smirk, or even Harrison Ford.

And that's all I could think of for now.

Shadow - Hugh Jackman or Jude Law
Wednsday - Anthony Hopkins or Donald Sutherland
Easter - Cate Blanchett
Czernobog - Christopher Walken
Ibis - Ben Kingsley
Mr. Nancy - Morgan Freeman or Samuel L. Jackson
Laura - Deborah Kara Unger
Hinnzelman - Harvey Keitel
Mad Sweeny - Steve Buscemi
Bast - Monica Belucci
Polunochnaya - Kirsten Dunst
The-Unknown -God - Christopher Lambert (his voice, at least)
Jacquel - Max von Sydow
Samantha Black Crow - Charlize Theron
Loki - Collin Farrell

There are so many characters. It'd be the most expensive cast ever if I could take all actors I'd like.

My husband just finished AG (he was a Gaiman-virgin), and announced that Mr Wednesday is Christopher Plummer.

And I thought, actually, yes...

Danny Glover as Anansi? He does that wild-eyed thing good.

How about Damon Wayans as Mr. Jacquel? Not Arabic enough, maybe.

This is my frist post!

I think its funny how so many people saw Vin as Shadow (including my friends) cause its not how he's described in the book. But it would work big time and I think he would do it cause he's a big nerd.

Czerborg(sp?) by Walken is a GREAT idea.

I saw Odin as Geroge Clooney because he plays a good con-man. And Loki could be either Colin Farrell or the guy who played Hugh Grants best friend in Notting Hill (don't know his name)

Shadow - Alas, I also saw Vin Diesel in my head. I can't think of anyone else who fits the description.

Wednesday - Gene Hackman

Czernobog - Brendan Gleeson

Nancy - Danny Glover

Laura - Jennifer Jason Leigh

Loki - Alan Cumming

Sam - Jessica Campbell (Election, Safety of Objects)

Mad Sweeny - David O'Hara (Stephen from Braveheart)

Bast - Nia Long

Ibis - Spike Lee

Anubis - Jamie Foxx

Easter - Monica Bellucci

Tech Boy - I don't know his name, but there's this fat kid at the end of Roger Dodger who would be perfect. He looks like a young Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Media - Kim Basinger

It's my first post. Hi guys!

When I first read AG I didn't even know who the guy I saw as Shadow was, just some face from previews I'd seen...of course, the mystery man was Vin Diesel. No one else I know of who fits the physical description of Shadow could handle the role. Diesel's the man. I've had dreams with him playing the part.

Rutger Hauer is a good choice for Wednesday, although last time I saw him in something, he was looking pretty rough.Sean Connery's probably a better bet.Oh, or Al Pacino!

I like Tim Roth as Loki...I thnk the main protagonist from Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, the redheaded one, could handle it too.

I love Anna Paquin, Christina Ricci, AND Fairuza Balk, but Sam's my fave character next to Shadow himself, and none of them are working for me...Lacey Chabert? Mena Suvari(ala' Loser)? Thora Birch? hmmm

I loved the idea of Buscemi as Czernobog, but my brother just suggested Jean Reno(The Professional,Ronin), so I'm conflicted.

Mad Sweeney...Henry Rollins? Some Wrestler? Hulk Hogan?!

I see Laura with kind of an aloof, aristocratic look...Milla Jovovich, or Mira Sorvino. Maybe Laura Prepon from That Seventies Show.

Mr Nancy's tough...there's a lot of great older black actors, but most of them are tall, and I envision Nancy very dimunitive.

Jack Osbourne as the fat kid/technology god. A shoo-in.

I think Brad Pitt is an inspired suggestion for Horus.

Cameron Diaz as the youngest Zoyra sister.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Easter!? Well, I'm trying not to take any of this too seriously, but that reply just angers me. Did you even read the book? Easter's supposed to be very voluptuous. Hell, if Gwyneth can play Easter, then so can Calista Flockhart or Lara Flynn Boyle.

Anyway, everything about Easter had me thinking Anna Nicole Smith back in the day. Not so much anymore, but she'd still definitely be Easter before Gwyneth or Cate Blanchett.

I'm with you, JC ... maybe there's some Bollywood actress with the right figure for Easter. Some other cultures have more respect for the concept of a rather zaftig beauty.

Hmmm ... how about large-size supermodel Emme?

I think if Tori Amos were to have a part, she should be the one to play Easter. With much lighter hair, it would definitely fit.
