Isn't Tori Amos also slim and waif-like? Once again, I have to point out that Easter is supposed to curvaceous and voluptuous.

I can see one of two men for the role of shadow:
1. Henry Rollins, Mr. Rollins in my mind could pull off not only the aspect of shadow truly being alive, but also how shadow distances himself from the world in general. Kind of a pseudo-isolation, in the middle yet on the side lines feel. 2. Vin Disel, as I was reading I pictured shadow as vin disel, it just seems right. 3. Above two men have a baby, that would be perfect....Now how would one go about that? |

After reading all the suggestion of vin d as shadow I found myself confused as I had always pictured shadow and henry rollins to be one in the same i believe thay rollins could do justice as shadow

Shadow-
Vin Diesel (I wish there was any other way) I would prefer Brue Willis, but Bruce Willis can't do 32. Remember Shadow needs to be big enough to have not been the type to have taken any shit in prison. Henry Rollins maybe, but I think he's too old. John Cusack is a no way for Shadow atleast. Hugh Jackman could work. Colm Meany? Wednesday- Needs to be charming, middle-aged. Anthony Hopkins is out. I like the idea of Rip Torn or maybe Tim Robbins Horus- Crazy Naked guy? Brad Pitt all the way Mad Sweeney- I'll go with Jason Lee. Laura- Definetly Patricia Arquette Nancy- Morgan Freeman I dunno.. But for god sakes.. obviouly Director- Neil Gaiman Oh my god, I'm confused, I want to be punk but there's way to many rules. |

If he was only a tad [or more] more mulatic, swedish actor Dolph Lundgren would be a good Shadow. But well, since this is a wishlist, I'd take Brandon Lee for Shadow, although I appreciate it would be hard to close a deal with him now...
Otherwise, for Shadow, I pictured him having the kind of rugged strength that doesn't show up in muscles, but instead in size. Both Brandon Lee and Vin Diesel, while being tall enough, would be too muscular-but-still-slim to correspond with my image of Shadow. He wouldn't be exactly bulky, but more square than V-shaped. ------------------------ Don't judge a book by it's contents' [This message was edited by Ionas on August 17, 2003 at 07:00 AM.] |

All right, I'm on page... what, five? And I can't believe no one has even suggested Gene Hackman as Wednesday. His role in The Royal Tenenbaums is exactly as I imagined Wednesday. Shadow's been Hugh Jackman, to me, but Putty from Seinfeld works, as well. And anyone remember the guy who keeps raping Andy in the Shawshank Redemption? That creepy guy with the red hair? I always thought of him as Loki. Maybe it's just because he talks really quiet and he's in prison.

You should have made it two more pages. I suggested Gene Hackman and yes, he was awesome in Royal Tenenbaums.

For Czernobog, how about Boris the Blade (or, Boris the Bullet-Dodger) from Snatch?

I'm really surprised at this board...
I just posted over in the Sandman casting side, and my pick for the lead wasn't even mentioned...and now here, my pick for the lead is mentioned....but for another part???? I can not in any way shape or form see Vin Diesel doing Shadow. Maybe part of it is that, as a filmmaker myself, I look at workability as much as talent, and Vin Diesel was an egotistical A-hole even before he did Pitch Black...but that's just not it. When Shadow was described in the book, I saw only one man. Michael Clarke Duncan. MCD is much bigger, darker, and more imposing than the rest of these guys, and has successfully displayed a passive yet emotionally complex character. See 'The Green Mile' for proof. He's got that deep voice that fits Shadow so well, and the facile details (hair, light patches of skin) can be fixed in makeup. The rest: Wednesday - Robin Williams. I'm a big fan of his, and I love his turns in slightly villainous characters. Give him a beard, a walking stick and a funny hat, and there you go. Laura - Claire Danes. There's something everyday yet sweet about her. I don't know, just my gut feeling. (Yes, gut. Nowhere lower.) Mad Sweeney - Sean Connery. There's a lot of younger actors named, but the old Gods I think should be portrayed by older actors. Czernobog - Michael Keaton. You say "No way." Yes, that's what you say, I can hear you. But they said the same things about him and Batman, and he was a damned good Batman. Sam - Evan Rachel Wood. Alright, so I've watched Thirteen a bit. So should you. Technical Boy - Jack Osbourne. Okay, so this blows my theory about workability out of the water. Still, I just want to see him get his @$$ kicked. Loki - Liev Schreiber. Flame at will. |

The only problem I really have is that to many people are suggesting that white girls should play Sam. Sam's an Indian, and you can't gt away with calling a white girl Samantha Black Crow. It just don't work. Besides, Sam's too much of a minor character to have a big satr play her.
So here's my list: Shadow-big brooding guy with little or no emotion. Yup. That's Vin Diesel. Wednesday-aging norse god with a penchant for grifting and seduction. Jack Nicholson all the way. Czernobog-old crazy Russian dude who's hobbies involve killing cows. How about John Rhys-Davies from Lord of the rings? Nancy-I think James Earl Jones would be pretty good. Loki-definitely Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Can't remember his name. Easter-this is kind of an odd choice, but I'd say Queen Latifah. Horus-Elijah Wood. I mean, Horus kinda looks like a hobbit. Mr. Ibis-Anthony Hopkins. No explanation is needed. |

I just finished AG today and have been pondering this thread the whole way through.
I think, as it has been said before, big name actors are going to bring so much background the characters may get lost, so overall I'd choose new faces. Especially for Shadow and Wednesday That being said, I have some thoughts exactly the opposite. regardless of race, these guys just seem to fit for me: Czernobog: Gabriel Byrne/John Malkovich Loki: Christian Bale or Alan Cumming. Perhaps Tim Roth or , has anyone thought of Gary Sinese? I think he'd give him a sense of age. Laura: I just kept seeing Laura from High Fidelity, but afterthougt: Saffron Burrows (enigma, circle of friends) might be brillant. Ibis: Ben Kingsley! or Jim Broadbent, in very different ways. Mad Sweeney: I'd say Robert Carlyle but i can see Colin Farrell I suppose too Whiskey Jack: Joaquin Phoenix or maybe Benicio delToro Horus: I think Ryan Gosling would be really interesting and have always thought Johnny Lee Miller looked so much like a bird to begin with. Chad Mulligan: John C Reilly or Aidan Quinn and the girl from "But I;m a cheerleader" and "13 conversations about one thing" who is now on Carnivale would be an amaazing Sam. granted she is not Native American, but she just feels so right. I also think John Turturro, Johnny Depp and Richard E Grant would set the tone brilliantly but just cant see where they fit. Thus endeth the preaching. |

Hello all,
Just found this site ::slapping forehead::. I've now read AG twice, and it's funny that I never once cast the movie in my head. I think it's because I haven't read it enough. My ex and I used to spend hours casting Anne Rice's Vampire trilogy--but by then I had read each book more than 10 times (I reread it every summer usually). Anyway, while reading this board, a coupla things struck me (I can't remember who posted what). --------- Seth Green as computer boy --------- Danny Glover as Mr. Nancy --------- Spike from "Buffy" as Loki --------- At first I thought the Seth Green thing was weird, but I can't keep thinking about it. Spike would make an excellent Loki. At first, I thought the Danny Glover thing was crazy, but then...Did anyone see that independent movie that he made where he was kind of a mythological trickster? I can't remember the name of it--I think it was "Sleeping With Anger, but it was set in the deep South in like the 50s and he was this drifter who sort of came to town and became a part of community and then all this weird stuff started happening and he became weirder and weirder and then I think there was some sort of violent climax. I know I'm giving a pretty good description :> But thinking about that movie makes me think he would make an excellent Mr. Nancy, except I keep thinking of Mr. Nancy as short and kind of harmless looking which is why I was more leaning towards the Scatman idea. I think Ossie Davis is too dignified, not that Mr. Nancy isn't dignified, but he's also kind of silly in a foppish way, and I just can't see Ossie pulling that off. The most unpardonable sin in society is independence of thought. --Emma Goldman |

I just want to point out that an old Scandinavian god as Odin (or, as I prefer to say, Swede as I am, Oden) or Loki (Loke) is exactly that. Old Scandinavian. That menas blue eyes and, mostly, blond or red hair. Perhaps brown, definitely not black. Natural-looking. If you have brown eyes, and put in blue linses, you look weird, most often.
Just remember that, when you say "Odin that" or "Loki that". Scandinavians are often blond. 1500 years ago more so. |

Through the whole book I saw Gaiman as Shadow (with a few alterations that make him less British, I guess). Vin as Shadow? I always thought Shadow more introspective than Vin is able to display. I've also never thought to describe Vin as "brooding". The adjective implies intelligence, I think.
They could just make it animated instead. . . |

Just finished this outstanding book today. Thus, my .02 on casting the movie.
Shadow - Vin Diesel didn't feel quite right to me, and I was a little stumped until someone mentioned Henry Rollins. Good call on that one. Another good choice would be Campbell Scott - they can give him the build. Loki - I keep coming back to the red hair. Roth could do it well, and honestly, I think Kevin Bacon could do it, too. And Spacey - yeah, he'd be good. Gary Oldman, though. Best. Mad Sweeney - Gotta go with Robert Carlyle on this one. Wednesday - This was a toughie. Brian Cox (played Hannibal in Manhunter, excellent in The Long Kiss Goodnight) would be good. I think he's got the refinement that Rip Torn lacks. Bob Hoskins would also be a good choice for this one. Possibly Redford, too. Unknown God - David Hyde Pierce comes to mind. Maybe it's the description of his suits, but he strikes me as...forgettable. Czernobog - if Walken played him, he'd be playing himself, playing Czernobog. No. I'd say Eli Wallach if he wasn't dead. Malkovich, definitely. Laura - I kept thinking of Laura Linney - may be a shade too old for the role, but she's got the depth. Someone else mentioned Jennifer Connolly. I'd concur. Nancy - Joe Morton, possibly. Ibis - Joe Seneca (Crossroads, with Ralph Macchio) Easter - put some pounds on Cameron Diaz. She could do it. Barrymore, too cutesy. Cristina Ricci might be a better choice, as I think of it, though I pictured a woman in her early 40s who was both voluptuous and beautiful... Tech Boy - who's the kid who plays Goyle in the Harry Potter movies? I'll think of the rest in a few days. |
