I think this topic has been up quite long enough now. How about some voting now? If someone would take on the task of making a list of the nominated, and count the votes.
A "Basic favourit cast of 'American Gods' from the official fan forum"
Or something like that..

So many people see the bad things in the world and say "You see? That's the proof there is no such thing as a god - or if there is, he/she is evil".

But the thing is, what would that god want, since we're supposed to take care of this world? For us to learn to take care of it ourselves, or us to be used to that he/she does all the hard work?

I love that idea...but if he is wednsday then shadow has to look vaguely like him or have the same type of clout...that's a hard fit

Rip torn is an awesome choice but...shadow and Wednesday have to have something in common, looks, body behavoirs and the actor who plays shadow has to have the same kind of clout to stand up to him...and not get lost in the backrounds

I think thora Birch or Lee Lee Sobieski as Sam
thing is if you've seen "my first Mister" with Lee Lee you'd die she is so good, as this cynical gothic teen who grows out of her shell as the story goes on and the finished product character is very sam like...anyway Laura needs to be like so beautiful you get scared looking at her. So if people could put up with Shannon Doerity i'd say a weak maybe but she is all i can think of right now...being that im in class

On the other hand, he's been looking about 18 for the past ten years. And it depends on your application of 'boy'. Round here 'boy' is applied pretty much until you hit 25 or so.

You are a Leprechaun. I'm not even sure what you are. Whiskey-soaked reports from your baffling Isle of Ire raise more questions than they answer. Are you a dwarf? Where's your pickax? If you're an elf, why don't you cobble? You'd think with all your gold, you could invest in some land, perhaps a title, and improve your station. Instead, you hide it in meteorologically-determined locations. You're getting killed on inflation, little friend!

Now I know this is an old-ass post, but I wanted to comment...

Yeah, Ossie Davis is alive... and about 80. I just saw him in Bubba Ho-Tep, and he was fantastic. Buuuuut... my pick for Nancy has got to be Isaac Hayes. He's got the lanky, long-armed black guy look. He's got the cooler than cool, and slyer than sly attitude. And for vulgarity, absurdity, hilarity, and all-around wackiness, where else to look than his voice work as Chef on South Park?

o_O Seriously, Vin Diesel is as far from Shadow as you could get. Shadow isn't even bald. Am I the only one who imagines Shadow almost EXACTLY as Neil Gaiman himself? Maybe it's just because of his picture on the back of the book, but I thought that Shadow looked very much like Gaiman. Maybe a bit ruffier and not as happy-looking, but mostly I just imagined Gaiman as Shadow. Weird how no one else mentioned this.
And Billy Zane? Ving Rhames?! The only pick I've seen here that's good IMO is Bruce Campbell, that would make it the best movie ever.
Oh, and as someone said, David Sutherland = Wednesday.

[EDIT]
Hey, Belle Morte wanted Gaiman as Shadow too I noticed. Way to go!

I would like to kindly remind all of you that casting roles for movies properly is about casting people who can ACT, not just people who LOOK right for the part. A believablt portrayal of a specific personality means a lot more than just appearing "correct". That's why they have things like "makeup" and "special effects". Smile

OK first of all, Shadow is not bald. There are references to him combing his hair.

Next, his hair is dark. When he and Wednesday first go to see Czernobog, Czernobog says to Shadow that his hair used to be dark, even darker than Shadow's.

Next, it has to be at least shoulder length because that is the Hollywood stereotype of a Native American. Hollywood would make his hair long and straight in the movie, I guarantee it.

I agree Vin Diesel has the build for the role, but that's where it stops. He can't act his way out of a wet paper bag, and the person who would play Shadow needs to be able to potray subtle changes in mood. Mr. Town hated Shadow for being able to smile without moving his face, and the person who plays Shadow needs to be able to do that well. The face I pictured in my head was something like the main bad guy from the first Crow movie, but in looks only. Also, he'd need to have some makeup to make him look more pale. I definitely see Shadow as having a somewhat pale complexion. Primarily from being in prison for 3 years. However, he needs to look like he has at least a small amount of Native American heritage. Sam obviously notices this and asks him, so it must be apparent to the viewing audience as well. Vin Diesel doesn't look at all like a Native American, just to add to the list of reasons why he wouldn't work.

Tim Roth is too young to play Loki. I agree that he's a terrific actor, and he could play the role well, but you need someone who is genuinely older. Remember that these gods are hundreds if not thousands of years old.

Rip Torn is the only logical choice for Wednesday. I didn't think of him when I was reading the book, but after someone mentioned him it became obvious. He's old enough, has the right look to him (although they'd obviously have to dye his hair and beard reddish-gray), and he has that amazing charisma and lovability that Wednesday exudes so well.

I have a very specific picture of LAura in my head, and for the life of me I simply cannot find an actress that looks like the vision in my head. I guess the closest LOOK would be Elizabeth Hurley with bright blue contacts, but obviously she's a junk actress, and the British accent isn't right for the part.

I kind of like the idea of Christopher Walken as Czernobog, except for the fact that he's too tall and too skinny. Czernobog is described as short, a little pudgy. Christopher Walken's face certainly fits, and I'm pretty sure he's a good enough actor to pull off a believable East European accent, but he just doesn't seem exactly correct to me.

Catherine Zeta-Jones is certainly attractive, but she doesn't have that animal magnetism that Bast has. Plus, there's that British accent thing, accompanied once again by the fact that she's a junk actress. She couldn't say "I miss you, hon" believably. I'd say something like Vanessa Williams, simply because Bast is an Egyptian goddess, so she should either be black or middle-eastern as far as skin tone goes.

Also, whoever keeps suggesting non-black actors for Mr. Ibis needs to read the book again. Ibis and Jacquel are clearly described as being black in the book. I would say either Samuel L. Jackson or Morgan Freeman for Ibis. The other one could play Jacquel. I see Laurence Fishburne as being too young to play either of them. I really believe all the old gods need to be played be genuinely old people.

I can see how Jack Black could possibly play Technology or Internet or whatever you wanna call him. I'll just say Fat Kid. Here again we have an age issue. The Fat Kid is described as being very young, probably still in his teens. You'd have to get a young, unknown actor for this role, but maybe have him taking some coaching from Jack Black or something. Also remember that this kid is NOT funny in any way. He is totally the personification of an arrogant, spoiled, inexperienced internet tough guy. He's the kind of guy you find playing CounterStrike for 4 hours straight, and typing things like "OMG AWP CAMPER FAG!!!!11" to everyone who kills him.

Strangely enough, I pictured Martha Stewart as MEdia. Now obviously she's not an actress, but her exact look and personality are perfect for Media. I know Media is a new god, but her standard personification is that of an experienced news anchor. Besides, Media has been around long enough that if it weren't for Mr. World, she'd probably be the leader of the new gods. Anyway, for Media I suggest someone who can look and act like Martha Stewart. Does Sybil Sheppard still look young enough fo the part? She's a good actress and could pull off the role very well. She's not my final casting decision, merely a suggestion.

Easter has to be as close to Marilyn Monroe as you can get. One word: curvaceous. Most Hollywood actresses are so damn skinny these days, I'd think it would be hard to find a good actress that still has curves, or who would be willing to gain the necessary few pounds in order to become truly voluptuous. Since I can't picture anyone who really looks like this right now, does anyone have any other suggestions? Someone suggested Uma Thurman, and she's certainly a great actress, but she needs a LOT more up topside or a serious bra-stuffing to be convincing to me.

My wife and I are working on a cast list right now, and we're taking our time on it. I will definitely post it when we're done, which may take a week or 2.

I can't believe I hadn't suggested this earlier, but Alison Lohman is exactly how I imagined Sam, right down to her performance in Matchstick Men. Jack Nicholson is Czernobog to me, and definitely *not* Vin Diesel as Shadow, he just doesn't have the demeanor.

And just a note to everyone who's talking about hair and eyes being the wrong color, watch Lord of the Rings. They can do wonderful things with wigs and contacts these days.

Definitely Edward Norton for Loki. That one actor, the fat Cyber kid could be played by that one overweight kid who played in The Butterfly Effect.Scarlet Johansson perhaps could play Easter? I don't completely remember the actresses name, but she played Marla in "Fight Club" I'd like to see her as Laura. Jack Nicholson would perhaps make a decent Wednesday, but there may be someone else better. For Shadow, they should get someone less well known, and surely not make him appear to be the stereotypical Native American. I'm more interested to see who they collect to play some of the gods we see in the background. All in all, this movie should be tied very closely to the book. I don't think any of the books fans would appreciate special Hollywood touches, like Shadow hooking up with Sam at the end or his neighbor (they've been known to do that to wonderful books, butcher them).

Vin Diesel as Shadow?

Erm.

I always imagined Shadow as uh.. well sure as heck not Vin Diesel. eee-yew. Unless, of course the casting call calls for a no talent ass-clown. Then he'd be perfect.

Someone said Shadow would be best as an unknown… I’d have to agree with that.

We can be safe and just NOT make AG into a movie. Please?

I think that would be a good solution actually. After seeing the trailer for Ella Enchanted last week, I think it's best we leave our literature as just that.

i agree with everyone who said AG should NOT be made into a movie. good literature is just like a pretty young girl/boy walking the street, admired, and then hollywood swoops in and pimps the poor thing to anyone who'll drop a dime.
lord of the rings was a disappointment, to me at least. i read the books time and again and was never disappointed with the frodo in my head, never confined to seeing middle earth a certain way; anything i wanted to see or believe was all in me, and it didnt really matter what anyone else thought. now, frodo IS elijah wood, sam IS rudy, er, i mean, sean astin. the movie put such boundaries on my imagination - and there was no avoiding it, the damn thing was everywhere, on pencils and posters and bookbags, good god.
lets not pimp out good literature.
and if you are going to pimp out good literature, fashion it with unknown actors, people ive never seen before, so at least i will be surprised, and not think, "oh no, sean fatty astin is crying qagain." for the love of literature, please.

Ok, I had to join this forum specifically to post this Smile In no particular order, and not attempting to cast everybody:

Shadow - I think that Vin Diesel would try too hard, in a way. Shadow seems to have a sort of laissez-faire attitude that serves him well at times. So how about the Rock? Think about it. Just a touch of good humor about being the big dumb guy could work.

Wednesday - Now that we've seen what he's capable of, I say David Carradine.

Laura - Kirsten Dunst. Laura is obviously a darker character than she would appear to be, and Kirsten Dunst has this knack of looking like a savage at the oddest of times. That girl's got some sharp teeth...

Technical Boy - Jack Black would be funny, but he's just too old for the part. How about the obnoxious, profanity-spewing smart fat kid that was on that gameshow team in Magnolia? He'd be about the right age now.

Loki - Have to say that Steve Buscemi would own this. If not him, then Billy Bob Thornton.

Mad Dog Sweeney - Here's one of my favorites. The physical description begs for Will Ferrell. I know that he hasn't cut his teeth on drama yet, but I think he could be surprising. And when he fights with Shadow, it would be hilarious.

The spookshow - I could go with the idea that these should be completely anonymous actors, and that makes sense. But I would also like to try something else: since these are the archetypal government malfeasants, why not have fun with publlc expectations? Cast well-known "government" actors. Namely, Tommy Lee Jones, David Duchovny(!), etc.

Hinzelmann - Whoever suggested Anthony Hopkins is spot-on.

Czernobog - Agree with everyone else for Christopher Walken.

Mr. Nancy - I was sooo disappointed that someone thought of Bill Cosby before I did. That would be a total mindf***.

Ibis - Chris Rock. Obviously there could be some generational conflict between Rock and Cosby.

Horus - I think people are stuck on the Brad Pitt thing. He's a great actor, and yes, 12 Monkeys rocked, but this isn't a Brad movie. I say none other than Neil Gaiman himself.

Whaddya think?
