I am pretty certain to be the millionth retard (who can't spell), to go into this subject, but, I think that Vin Diesal(sp) would be perfect for a "American Gods" movie. It is such a great book, and I can think of noone else to properly fit the role. Also, he is not the hottes commodety right now. It may be a good time to approach the project. I am reading "American Gods" for the 4th time now, and just finished "Stardust". Keep up the good work.

I don't think a movie could tell the story right. The books just to much narative.
Unless they butcher the story I fear it would just end up like how they made the Dune movie. You know the one with all the thought wispers.
I think something like a 4 or 5 part miniseries might work but not a movie.
Vin Diesal could work as Shadow.

A movie? That would be interesting. But I am not sure if Vin Diesel can portray the sensitive and childlike side of Shadow. But then again, it's hard to imagine anyone else.

I'm sure I metioned this before, but I feel Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey in The Green Mile) would be perfect as Shadow - the book constantly refers to his being big, and Duncan acts with great sensitivity and warmth, but also fierce passion throughout the movie. I'm damned sure there's a thread here somewhere that has loads of posts about casting suggestions for the whole movie - hang on a sec and I'll hunt it down.

Actually, if you read the novel, Michael Duncan Clark WOULD NOT fit the role of Shadow. Shadow is not a black man. As a matter of fact, his ethnicity is never able to be truly and fully pinned down. Personally, I do not think that Vin Diesel is a great person to pick for the role either. If you think about it, the person would probably have to be someone that is big, but probably white...however a darker skinned person would work as well, simply because his ethnicity is discriminate throughout the novel. Take Odin, or Wednesday if you prefer. He, being Odin, is a Viking god, and Vikings were...well, white people. Then, Wednesday had a particular liking for females with pale skin, and blonde hair. I cannot recall if this is what Shadow's mother was, but, it would fit then that Shadow himself must be white. Now, having said that, since he would be the offspring of Wednesday, or Odin (which, by the way, is a direct reference to Bauldr, Odin's son of Viking mythos), it could be suggested that his skin doesn't have to have the "white" or caucasian color to it. Just a thought.

Personally, I've always pictured Dwayne Johnson as the perfect fit for Shadow, and Robert Redford as Wednesday (Robert has reddish hair, and Wednesday was supposed to have reddish hair in his "younger" years).
