New to this list. 64, male, Boston-based. Started reading American Gods last night. Today I started noticing that many of the stray dogs that roam the dark neighborhood of Naples (Quartiere San Lorenzo), Italy (where I am currently located) look much like jackals.

Initial impressions:

This novel commands all the senses. As I read I taste, smell, hear and see all that is going on.

Chapter 6 reminded me of the pyrotechnic episodes found in Mark Helprin, "A Winter's Tale" especially.
