It's been about three years since I read the book, but did Laura cheat all on her own, or was she charmed by Wednesday? So that Shadow could get out of prison. Sorry if this has been discussed before.

Er, it wasn't Wednesday that Laura was having the affair with, but with Shadow's best friend.

It seems like it was a pretty voluntary thing, especially since she was the one who argued for one last time together that night they were in the accident.

I got the impression Wednesday organised it.
Otherwise it’s an amazing coincidence that the two ties between Shadow and his old life were broken, at the same time.

Okay, that's my fault for wording it wrong. Laura had an affair with Robbie, yes, we all know, but...was that staged by Wednesday and Loki? Wednesday has eighteen charms, so I was wondering if any of those charms could be repsonsible for the affair. Like I said, it's been a long time since I read American Gods, but I remember Wednesday saying a line twice in the book, refering to Laura and Shadow getting out of jail thing, something like, "If it had been any other way." And then the book went on to describe that it was then Shadow understood what that remark really meant. Or it could be, that Laura did the cheating on her own, and Wednesday used that to his advantage, to get Shadow out of prison early, since the affair was already going on for a couple of years.

I don't think Wednesday had anything to do with Laura's affair - remember she gave Shadow her reason for cheating with Robbie.
The truck hitting them, on the other hand, could very well have had Loki behind the wheel...

If he [Odin] did have anything to do with Laura's affair, it would fit in with the way he works in real life. To further his agenda he will often cut away anything a person has come to rely on in order to force that person to respond and grow. Perhaps, before writing his book, Gaiman talked to people who have experience of working with Odin.

I've posted several times, but now I've come to the conclusion that Laura did cheat on Shadow, all on her own. And that Wednesday and Loki just devised the plan to get rid of Laura so they could get to Shadow.

For what it's worth, I am inclined to think Odin and Loki engineered the whole thing. We know Odin can get women into bed using magic; we don't know the full extent of his charms. I think it was very convenient for Mr. Wednesday that Shadow wasn't grieving a pure chaste woman who loved him beyond anyone else in the world; that her stepping out vastly inceased Shadow's vulnerability to manipulation. Plus, made it much easier to kill off the guy who was going to give Shadow a job . ..

Doesn't Wednesday (or maybe it was Loki) make a comment to Shadow at one point about how they were sorry about what happened with Laura. I mean, not just sorry it happened, but it seemed to me they were implying they'd done it. 'If it could have been any other way...' kind of thing.

Dont know so much about what Odin and Loki have to do with the affair, but i feel for Shadow. What his wife did was dispicable, you cant love someone and do that to them. other than that maybe odin charmed her with a power of his to like robby. who knows.

I think she redeemed herself my killing the characters who set Shadow up.

Sure what she did while Shadow was in prison was wrong, but by no means should it be held against her because of those actions after she "died".

I'm not sure. I re-read American Gods recently, and it seemed to me that Laura was very manipulative of the people she meet, and of Shadow. We know he went to jail for her (although exactly what Shadow means by that is defiantly unclear), we know she leads of Wood before she kills him, there is a way to read the book in which she acts in a very self-serving way.
This wasn't a vibe I got from her on first, second or even third reading, but last time I got the impression that Shadow wasn't just a pawn for Wednesday and Loki, but for her.

Point taken. She was manipulative with Town also, but then she also did good along with the bad. Rather have her pawn shadow than loki or wednesday if you ask me.

I think the manipulation is part of her nature.

I agree that Laura was very manipulative, but Shadow was a lamb, not only in her hands but in everyone hands.

The explanation comes when he thinks about his past when he first was a quiet and love reading boy and everybody bullied him and then he grow up and decided that being the typical big and dumb guy were the best of his options to not be bullied again. In all his life he follow the path people expected him to take in spite of his own interests which we really never reach to know. It's like he does not any interest until he meets Laura.

When Laura cheated him, Wednesday fill the "master" rol in his life until he starts to become aware of himself and stop the battle and that kind of things at the end.

That's why Laura said he was dead in life. He was a puppet.
