On the http://www.neilgaiman.co.uk/stuff.php page, they list a new print of American Gods that has more, more, more. Is this edition also longer than the US edition?

I suspect so, if there are 12,000 more words. I believe it's only the UK version, however.

That sounds suspiciously like the Hill House edition of the book ("This edition features over 12,000 words of text that did not appear in any previous editions of the novel." - Hill House site). I'm going to look into it...

What's the purpose? I thought English translated to English pretty easily.

English sometimes translates well, but not always. But, in this case, that isn't the issue.
For Neverwhere, the US edition was significantly different from the UK edition due to some cut humor and the need for more explainations of locations people in the UK didn't need explained. (I've never done a comparison, but Neil's mentioned it in interviews many times. Something along the lines of 2000 words cut, 10000 words added).

In this case, the UK and US American Gods editions were essentially the same when they first came out. Hill House published an expanded edition last year with 12000 words (about 40 pages) of new material not in either edition. This sounds like, though I can't confirm, the new UK edition is reprinting that expanded edition. I can't tell you why the scenes were cut in the first place, but there ya go.

Amazon UK finally got my copy to me. Confirmed - the new paperback (ISBN 0-7553-2283-5) is the Author's Prefered Text previously available only from Hill House.

Can anyone say where the extra words go in? I'll find out soon enough (when I have the money to buy the book) but I'm curious to find out.
