I've always been a big fan of our Hob myself, but it is difficult to choose a favourite child.

You are an Accomptant. You keep track of the King's accounts, which is a fairly simplish job: his current holdings is always A LOT, and his expected revenue is always MORE. 'Sgood ta be da King. As long as there isn't a peasant uprising, you're likely to keep your head. Also, you're the only one in the office who knows how to use an abbacus. (Or multiply.) (Or add.)

I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not.

A Tale of 2 cities for me, because it makes sence in my mind, and that im one of those people who likes to look at places.
Cerements came close second.

I might post there again (probably will), but it still feels weird having posted a McDonalds thread in the first place. And I'm generally trying to keep to Gaiman subjects (almost purely The Sandman). That's why I joined. I'll also come here to get the perspective on something I find interesting, usually in poll form.
I chose The Golden Boy because it was like a screwed up history lesson, and I thought it was compelling.

I enjoyed all the stories but I think I liked Golden Boy the best. I loved the use of old DC myth and the marriage to art might have been the best of the bunch.

The other stories are very good though.....

They're all good, but it's definitely The Golden Boy. I just like anything with the whole Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust sort of theme going on. Plus Death is in this story, which automatically boosts its rating.

Black Wings loves all of you, even though many of you are new since he vanished for a year.

Boundless love for all!

i'm new to this board, so first of all hello to everybody!

my favorite story in world's end is 'a tale of two cities' for these reasons:
- the extraordinary artwork
- gaiman's approach of using a place as main character
- the somewhat discomforting ending

but speaking of this book in general, could
anyone please tell me if there's a source, where
some interpretations of the stories are discussed?
although i'm reading the book for the second
time, i've got to admit that i'm not sure as to
what gaiman's 'message' concerning each of the
stories could be...

Welcome! Glad you found the board.

There is a wonderful book entitled "The Sandman Companion" by Hy Bender, which goes through "The Sandman" series, with lots of information from interviews with Neil Gaiman as well as expository writing on each book of the series. It's excellent for finding out stuff that one missed reading alone. I don't know all the details of how one can order books in Germany, but it shouldn't be too hard to get. Maybe Amazon UK? I'll go try to dig mine out (moved recently, and things aren't where they should be yet) and see what it says . . .

I liked "Hob's Leviathan" because of the introduction of some of the most interesting immortal characters who are not in fact Endless or gods. I also like the little hints as to the origins of the storyteller as well. They're pretty obvious when you see them. Wink

I also liked "Cerements" because of hints into the origins of the Endless. And "A Tale of Two Cities" ... well ... I am partial to that one as well. It reminds me of the Sim City 2000 story that Neil wrote. Wink

Thanks everyone. I've entertained myself a lot by watching the poll results.

And I'll note a mistake I made in the lead: I said I'd listed the major stories when I'd really just listed the names of the five issues included in Worlds' End.

Really was surprised to see "The Golden Boy" take the lead. I dunno why, but I thought "Hob's Leviathan" would take the win, if just for the appearance of Hob Gadling.
