wow
just when i think you can't get any worse, you do
this is amazing
after this, Keanu as Constantine makes sense... he does look good in a black trenchcoat. sometimes.

josh hartnett? i can't even remember who he is...

At the risk of being set upon by all present, torn apart and hung from the nearest tree ... if one of Dream's main defining characteristics is a sense of being slightly disconnected from the world around him and perhaps being "not all there" ...
... then wouldn't Keanu Reeves have been rather good?
Okay, so he's probably not the world's greatest actor, but in this role I don't think you want someone who is acting their socks off and putting in lots of little character details, you just want someone who can convincingly play ... emptiness.

Just as Schwarzenegger was very good in Terminator at playing a clunky unemotional monosyllabic hulking robot who couldn't quite fit in as human, I think KR might have been good at playing a slack-faced blank-eyed figure who walks amongst humans without really giving anything away about what's going on inside (if anything is).

But I suppose that now that KR has done Constantine, that's less likey to happen (I thought James Masters or Guy Pearce woud have been good as Constantine, they both give off that sense of maybe having just been beaten up recently).

yah know... you kinda make a good point... but i just can't handle any more Morpheus/Morpheus confusions

or you could get a good actor, like Kevin Spacey. keep in mind that Dream also needs to look like a badass when he displays his omnipotent power... having seen Keanu with omnipotent power over a (kinda) lucid dream, i don't think he works

Hugo Weaving would rock, though

okay morpheus is detached yes, but he isn't emotionally dead. i mean, you want an actor who can keep it low key and let the tide of emotions spill over ...uhm gracefully. beautifully. not with the force of a tidal wave, nor ...the ineptitude of keanu (sorry can't think of a metaphor here). i see morpheus as more of a void created by repression and other deep personal issues rather than a void created by one who's brain dead....

i thought you kinda had a point, not the he's 'the main man'. anyone else from The Matrix would be better as Dream. even Carrie Anne Moss

hehehe

Lady Doom: my point is that everyone from The Matrix was head and shoulders over Keanu in acting ability. people like Sydney local Hugo Weaving or movie Morpheus Laurence Fishbourne have the right mix of dignity and menace to make GREAT Dreams

keanu... no

I think one minor (well hopefully minor) prob with Hugo Weaving is he'd have to show a vulnerable side, if the movie's gonna show some of it. He's got the brooding, stoic all-too-serious attitude down indeed though.

in 'the Adventures of Pricilla, Queen of the Desert', an Aussie classic, he climbs Ayers' Rock (sorry, Uluru). in full drag
i think he also cries in that
he's done comedies here, too. lots of vulnerable stuff
but he's a stone cold badass who'd send a girl to hell for turning him down... in the Matrix, i mean. probably not in real life

Just saw, "Constantine" with Tilda Swinton playing Gabriel-she would make a terrific Desire.

Try
"Jonathan Rhys Meyers"

This man would be absolutely perfect for Morpheus!

If you insist on destroying our illusions by casting Morpheus in the first place I`d venture to suggest that a complete unknown be given the role thus freeing us at least from any preconceptions about their performance and one sufficiently lacking in ego ( Not to mention being profoundly grateful for the exposure ) to allow the character to overwhelm their personality to a degree that`ll they find it hard to escape being seen as Dream of the Endless in the future.

i just realized something
okay... in Sandman, its assumed we've all seen Dream, but we don't really remember him well
so they should cast one of those guys you see everywhere, but who's never had a starring role

like... um... J.K. Simmons. JJJ in Spider-Man, been on Law and Order and Oz, so he's vaguly familiar... someone younger, obviously, but thats an example of what i mean

but other then that, you need someone with serious presence, and there's nothing wrong with a star playing him

I disagree with your last sentence tlon. Stars tend to come with strong on-screen personas ( Heck, even Keanu carries expectations, if not good ones ) that risk humanizing Morpheus in a way that makes nonsense of his essential dilemma, namely that he doesn`t know *how* to adapt when he`s Endless. It`s not such a big deal for the others but with Morph, it`s his fall from impersonal certainty into doubt that requires a tabula rasa to pull it off.
