Probably Desire would need to shape shift every time the camera pans back to her. No special effects, just a different actor/actress every time.

Ralph Fiennes.

He has the long face, they can dye his hair, and he can wear contacts or they can CGI his eyes. Plus he does "deep, quiet guy who'se actually a badass" very well.

I don't really have a mental image of anyone famous playing Dream, and I don't imagine a Sandman movie will ever get made.

But in the case of Death, where it sounds like a movie will be made, I have to staunchly recommend the adorable Zooey Deschanel, to the point that I would practically boycott the movie if it was made without her.

She's probably most famous for being the adorable older sister in Almoust Famous, and was recently seen as the adorable music teacher in Bridge to Terabithia.

Sorry, I'm no good at this internet stuff, but here are some examples why:

Zooey #1.

Zooey #2.

Her films.

There. I said it.

She'd be good. She's cute and sweet but not hothothot; she looks like someone's sister that you might have a crush on.

I dont know, ive talked to alot of people about this and the most common name that everyone thinks of is Depp, now i can picture depp as crowley from Good Omens but i cant see him playing dream, to be honest ive always pictured dream as being played by Joaquin Phoenix. Call me crazy but i think he has the look and the chops to pull it off

http://www.murphsplace.com/crowe/phoenix2.jpg

For that matter Shannyn Sossamon should be death, no questions asked.

No, I haven't read the thread. That said, I can see Johnny Depp as Morpheus, because Depp is the only man I know who can exhibit the right sort of gravitas needed for the role. Costuming and make-up will do for the look, what you want is the feel and that he can pull off.

I signed up just to tell you all that Depp would make a HORRIBLE Morpheus. Not that anything is wrong with him as an actor, I have a lot of respect for him... but he doesn't fit the part at all. It absolutely boggles my mind how any of you could actually imagine him playing such an enigmatic character as Dream.

On the same note, Guy Pearce, Joaquin Phoenix, Helena Bonham Carter, and Shannyn Sossamon (MUCH too egomaniacal.) alike are all bad choices to represent anyone in the Sandman series.

Here is my Sandman cast:

Dream: Neil Gaiman (after all, he knows him the best)
Death: Zooey Deschanel or Natalie Portman
Destiny: Liam Neeson
Despair: Roseanne (with makeup? You can't deny it)
Desire: Bimba Bose (very androgynous) or Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Delirium: Evanna Lynch
Destruction: Viggo Mortensen (he's burly enough)
Lucifer: David Bowie
Lucien: Alan Cumming (it would be a challenge but physically he is quite perfect)

I'm interested to know who people think could play Cluracan. Now there's an interesting role. Also, I think my cousin's boyfriend looks a lot like Destruction, not that that means anything to you people.

I have a long list that I have been working on for years and have not yet finalized. So glad to know that all of you have thought of this as well!

Death: Cate Blanchett (remember in Elizabeth when she could be dreamy, flighty, and willful?)
Destiny: Clive Owen (tall enough with a deep enough voice)
Dream: Jonathan Rhys Myers (off the sauce, hopefully)
Desire: Natalie Portman with the "V" haircut
Despair: Brenda Blethlyn (has played countless despairing British mothers)
Delirium: Jena Malone (Lydia in 2005 Pride and Prejudice)
Destruction: Daniel Craig (who could really tear stuff up in 007)

The Cornithian: Ewan McGregor
Lucifer: Michael C. Hall (Dexter on Showtime, plays serial killer/ Archangel Michael depending on your perspective)
Rose Walker: Lauren Ambrose (Claire from Six Feet Under) shares similar angst
Lyta Hall: Jennifer Anniston, who knows about scorn
Barbie: Drew Barrymore-who, come on, has always wanted to be Barbie. Besides, she's smart.
Thessaly: Christina Ricci in very thick glasses
Orpheus: Adrian Grenier from Entourage
Cluracan: Simon Woods from 2005 Pride and Prejudice
Nuala: Zooey Deschanel (who gets to be the last person Dream loves)
Lucien: John Cleese (we need some humor here, people)

Daniel: Justin Hartley (Oliver Queen from Smallville)

I watch too much tv and now I think it's time for bed. Night y'all and I hope I've started a good discussion.

Personally, I get so tired of seeing the same actors over and over again in films! I would really like to see mostly unknowns in a Sandman film. Or at least, not super famous stars like Johnny Depp.

i feel like Gael García Bernal should be in it somehow...possibly as daniel?
he is an incredible actor, from babel, the science of sleep and bad education.
totally agree with adrian brody as dream...but then again if there was a movie i would probably become all bitter and boycott it anyways...
btw i'm new, so hello everyone out there!!

Hello all, new being here Smile

I utterly love casting favourite stories. And Sandman has been such a favourite for so long, ah.
Here's my take:

The one I'm most sure of first:
Destiny - Max von Sydow. Definitely. Gravitas, mystery, and great actor.

As for Dream - very very difficult. Neil himself is an interesting idea, but since he's not actually an actor I don't think so. Adrien Brody now, that could work. Or Daniel Day-Lewis. Johnny Depp is a brilliant actor, but way too sweet for Dream.

Lucifer - I'd love Bowie, but unless we get a time machine I think perhaps not. Jude Law would work well, or Julian Sands.

Destruction - Brian Dennehy! Brian Blessed could work as well. For some reason, Destruction has an Irish voice in my head.

Death - I'm surprised to say this, but I'm going with Natalie Portman. *nods head* The more I try it out in my head, the more perfect it seems.

Despair - I'm thinking Kathy Bates here. She can be mighty scary.

Desire - Carrie Ann Moss would work very well.
Or here's putting a new name into the mix: Katherine Moennig who plays Shane on L-word. Androgynous, HELL yeah, has magnetism and looks, and oozes sex and, yes, desire.

Delirium, though, has me at a loss. Who? Young, quirky, sweet, weird. Huh?

I'm terribly sorry I didn't read the whole thread, so perhaps he's been suggested already, but how about Rob Smith of the Cure? Don't know if he can act or anything, but he is imho the personification of Lord Morpheus Smile
