What about a manga series of Sandman, as in something along the lines of X1999? Anime? I think it'd be groovy, and voice actors would be much easier to choose than actual actors. David Boreanaz would make a cool Dream... James Hetfield from Metallica could do the voice for Destruction!! Smile It could work...it'd take SOO much time though, but it could be really cool. Yoshitaka Amano (of Final Fantasy&Dream Hunters fame) could work magic on it. PS Sorry - I'm only new to this... just read all the Sandman & Death graphic novels last week so I'm a bit of a virgin in all of this. Roll Eyes

i *love* the idea of Nathan Lane as Abel. When he tones himself down and doesn't act as flamboyantly goofy, he's marvelous. whoever said it, good work! i'm going to stop pondering this now.

I believe she meant to say "anime" and not "manga". I common mistake to make.

Welcome to the boards!!!

hands down weirded out enough to carry off morpheus on stage or screen (wow, there's a thought, wouldn't broadway be the perfect venue?); he's androgynous, he is of dubious age, he looks good in black and he's pasty, if you pay close attention you'll notice that sometimes when he talks little black balloons with white words fall out of his mouth...it's uncanny

ok, i'm surprised this topic's been going on this long and my thought hasn't yet been voiced.

First, go watch Bowling for Columbine. Excellent movie. Wonderful. Makes you angry. I love it.

Now, come back, and tell me what you think of the idea of Marilyn Manson as Dream. That interview scene in BfC - his pose. Look at it. He sits the exact same way Morpheus does. He has the paleness. He has the long, thin hands. He's tall. He's also intelligent. He's aloof, yet reachable, amazing. I dunno if he could actually act it well, but if he could, I think he'd be awesome. And I don't think he looks too old.

Oh, and Johnny Depp? I adore him, but there's always an element of vulnerability and loveability in his performances which would detract from his part as an endless. Please don't try to think of him as Desire. Ever. It just wouldn't work. Think Edward Scissorhands... now think Desire. Got it? Good.

And NO Christina Ricci for Death. Ever. She scares me.

How 'bout Mary Stuart Masterson (from Benny and Joon, with Johnny Depp and Aidan Quinn - good movie) for Delerium? She's pretty short, got the blonde hair. Facial structure's a bit off, but hey. She can do delirious.

Also, I think Victoire Thivisol needs to factor in somewhere. I love that girl. If you don't know who I'm talking about, I'm not surprised. She was in Chocolat (as Anouk, Vianne's daughter) and Ponette, a wonderful French film which she did at the age of three and a half years old. She's fabulous.

Judi Dench for Mad Hettie. Always. *grins* I'm madly in love with the woman.

Anyway. I'll stop now. Wink

Keunu Reeves as Morpheus and Jake Gylenhaal as Daniel. (They resemble each other, I guess. Maybe I need to get my eyes checked...)

Oh, oh, and definitely Anna Paquin for Delirium!

I'm another newbie, but I'm sure I'll be making the rounds on this board as time goes by...

Anyways, I used to have this discussion a lot, and though most of the other roles we could never agree on, Morpheus also was pretty obvious to us.

Liev Schreiber.

He's a tall guy, something that's very important, and a very talented actor, and very good in various contemplative roles, doing very well in everything from Hamlet to Orson Welles.

I must admit, though, Johnny Depp is an interesting idea, especially after watching "Pirates of the Carribean."

Some other suggestions -

Death - Jessica Alba. Okay, this is mostly from being a fan of hers, but she hasn't been bad at all in various roles (Idle Hands, Dark Angel)

Delerium - A big 'if only', but a much younger Drew Barrymore. Nowadays, Evan Rachel Wood might be worth looking at.

Lucifer - Brad Pitt. No question.

The Corinthian - James Marsters. I saw it earlier, and I don't disagree.

Anna Paquin's taken some crap in this thread, but how about her as Rose?

And, just to come out of left field a little, how about Robin Williams as Loki?

Just my ideas. I do think that a Sandman movie would be a very bad idea...but there are other possibilities.

Hmm... I always thought of Dream as seeming older than Death, sort of... So I figure Jeremy Irons would make a good dream, I can't think of anyone who can seem more haunted. But I like Adrien Brody in it, too.

Hi, I am brand new to this board, well, boards in general, actually. But this is a subject that has always facinated me. I think that Anna Paquin would make a better Death than Delirium. She just somehow doesn't strike me as having enough whimsey to be Del. But what about Alison Lohman? She has the right sort of look and I'm sure she could do slightly insane quite easily.

And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had.

I think Jeremy Irons would make a really wonderful DESTINY but I'm going to have to go with most of the board and say that Johnny Depp would be a fabulous Dream. The illistrations in Endless Nights reminded me of Depp in Sleepy Hollow and I was sold. He has this eerie, let alluring quality that I think the incarnation of Dreams would possess.

Though, in all honesty, I would probably cringe to see Sandman as a movie. It's a story about a million stories that are neither here nor there so what would the focus be? I'm not saying that all stories need a plot but it does help, particularly when you're trying to do something mainstream like a movie. What arch would you tell? Dream's capture and release? The search for Destruction? The key to Hell? Desire's vendetta? The Wake and all the events leading up to it?

I just don't know how Sandman would be translated from the comics easily. But if I had to throw out a few suggestions I would say:

Gary Oldman - Cain
Jude Law - Lucifer

Johnny Depp. Definitely. He could play anyone. He's got the cheekbones, the talent, and the brooding intensity that Dream needs. He's also incredibly hot.

Not Ashton Kutcher. Really. In the name of all things pure and holy, NO.

After seeing the Royal Tennenbaums, i just had the idea of transplanting that cast... sorta variations on a theme. A screwed up family of misfits, or something.

Lesse... i like the Wilson Bros... Luke's got the frown for Dream, easy. Owen.... hrm... might even be Desire, though i would reserve that for a Depp or a Bowie. If you saw him in The Minus Man, a great serial killer flick, his suitibilty for Desire becomes more obvious.
Stick William Defoe in there, not sure as who. Maybe as Lucifer. Ben Stiller is the "hapless mortal", if one is needed. Mandy Moore is Del, since after dying her hair she actually looks good enough to be deep. Scarlett Johansson, from Ghost World and Lost in Translation, is Death.

Bill Murray is Cain, Nathan Lane is Abel. Unless you want to put Matthew Brodrick as Cain, which would also make sense.

Excelsior!

Start with an opinion that's guaranteed to get you villified or venerated.
I wonder...

Gary Oldman as Dream. Most of his performances carry enough shadow to chill the soul.

Amy Lee as Death. I saw a picture of her today. And thought she would fit perfectly. If you want I'll post a pic so you can see.

Bjork as Delerium. Absolutely.

Dame Judy Dench as Mad Hettie. Because she can. One of the finest and most talented actors we will ever see.

Jeff Goldbloom and Rowan Atkinson as Cain and Able. Or perhaps the other way around? Both do twisted brilliantly (have you ever seen "Mr Frost"?).

John DiMaggio as (the voice of)Matthew.

Brad Pitt as Desire. He'll need to shave. Oh, and I'm straight.

Ron Perlman as Destiny. Superb actor.

Sean Pertwee as Hob Gadling. Another superb actor.

The Rock as destruction. Fine performer.

I am at a loss to "cast" Dispair.
Perhaps Courney Love? Not too sure why. Perhaps its because she is already living the role?

I await the testing of my mettle.

I am in the Depp camp for Dream. Especially after his fantastic performance in Pirates of the Caribbean, and of course Edward Scissorhands...I think I see dream as a cross between the two.

As for the rest of the Endless...
Destiny- Gary Oldman or Hugo Weaving

Destruction- Sean Bean (he's quite the strapping lad. I just saw him on Jim Henson's the Storyteller DVD, and his costume looks exactly like Destruction's in Endless Nights)

Despair- Well, the only middle-aged actress with that body type I can think of is Kathy Bates, but she's too pert--she probably could pull it off, though, now that I think about it.

Desire- Jude Law. That face is just too pretty to be manly, but too manly to be girlish.

Delerium- I kept seeing Tori Amos, but assuming that she can't act, Lori Petty a la Tank Girl.

Death- Helena Bonham Carter.
