Couple of months back on another message board a poster mentioned that DC Comics was going to be coming out with an Absolute Edition of Sandman, like they have done with JLA/Avengers, League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Watchmen etc.

But it's been a couple of months and I haven't heard anything else about it, so I'm asking here.

Is DC going to do this and if so, what is the format ie: price number of volumes, bonus materials etc.

There is definitely going to be an Absolute Sandman. They are currently working on it and Neil mentioned it several times in the blog recently. Here is a post where he mentions details like number of pages and what's going to be in them. He says they will come out over a couple of years, I wouldn't expect the first one too soon. Give it a few more months at least.

From what I understand there will be four volumes out over the next few years or so, first is slated to be a $99.99 price point. Start saving your pennies....But knowing DC it'll be beautiful, and well worth it.

Is that for all 4 volumes, or each of them? I have no idea what this "absolute something" are worth. I definitely want at least the first one.

I think Absolute Watchman cost $99, Chimeer. A little too rich for my blood.

Absolute Watchmen cost $75, and the $99.99 for Absolute Sandman is for each. Absolute editions are generally one price or the other, depending on content. They're all hardcover slipcased editions, and as far as worth, it depends on how you value quality. The trim size is usually about 8X12, so they're pretty big, nice to look at, but I can't imagine a lot of people pulling one off the shelf to read cover by cover.

You could always put it on your Christmas list.

Allright then, I can see myself probably buying the first one. It just happens that I have the first two volumes in French (and btw, Preludes and Nocturnes was translated into 2 volumes, 1. Preludes and 2. Nocturnes) so I always thought I might get the English version at some point. This seems like a good excuse. Especially since the most improvements about the color and quality of the printing are going to be in the first volumes more than the others. All 4 seem like a lot of money.

Just curious, what would be in this for you to want to pick it up? I've got the single issues, I've got the trades ... not sure what could possibly be in it that would lure me to shell out $100/

I'm not sure if the question is for me or in general. In my case I kinda answered by the fact that I don't have a couple of volumes in English, and then I know that they improved the color and printing quality a lot. Plus there's gonna be additional new stuff like an intro and possible versions of the character they thought of (though those can also be found somewhere else - and he might have said they won't include that in particular but other stuff instead). It's like buying a dvd for the extra material.

A very expensive DVD that you've already got on VHS.

JP, I think it's appeal is mostly for collectors, completists. It's a good gift idea. As Chimeer said, there will be extra stuff in, and DC is phasing the hardcovers out, too. So we'll see. Absolute editions aren't for everyone, but they're nice to have and to look at. I know personally I was working at B&N at the time I got into Sandman and ordered the hardcovers in lieu of the trades when a co-worker lent me his collection.

Extras haven't been announced, yet. Besides the re-coloring of some stories, I'm not sure what else will be in there.

Are they going to be leather bound with inlay?

If they're like the other Absolutes, probably not leatherbound. But I can't say for sure.

Yep, like I said the trim size for most is at least 8x12, usually a couple of inches thick, and about 20 lbs. (kidding about that last bit, but they are heavy).

I wouldn't want a dust cover. I really enjoy the covers to The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell. Has anyone seen those. They're nice. I think the Magyk books by Angie Sage would have been very nice had they not had dust covers.

I had the single issues & never bothered to get the trades/hardcovers. From reading Neil's comments on his journal;
quote:
From Neil's Journal:
I don't think the extras in the trade paperbacks wil be repeated in the Absolute Sandman volumes, mostly because I'd assume people probably have the books with the introductions in. We're looking at putting new stuff in, and we're not yet sure what it's going to be -- I'm going to try and find things like the original proposal and notes, perhaps the script to Sandman #1 for the first volume. Right now Danny Vozzo is recolouring the first 18 issues of Sandman to take advantage of modern printing techniques and to fix things we weren't happy with at the time.

It's going to be a four book set, by the way, of about 600 pages per book, and I believe they'll come out over a couple of years.
I'm not sure now whether I will get the Absolute editions because they're not absolute. If it was an absoulte edition of Sandman then it should include the extras that were in the trades.
