I thought Neil could have done a lot more, in terms of story, with Endless Nights than he did. it's a shame Frown

Highlights are Dream's story and Despair's story.

I'm a bit disappointed with Death's story (as he uses an idea he's used before in the specials) Destiny's (too simply) and Delirium's (mwah)

I liked Desire's and Destruction's story alright.

Endless nights is great if you haven't read Sandman or the specials, but some stories are a bit of a let down if you have... in terms of art, some of it is a lot better than that of earlier Sandman episodes, i thought

yeah.

I did love the http://www.slashdot.org reference, but that was pretty much it.

Oh, and BTW: Who is Mizer, from the Dream story? I know Sto-oa became Oa, and Rao is Krypton's sun (Byrne had Supes say "Great Rao" sometiems), and Sol is Earth... but i don't know Mizer.

I don't mean to be picky LoN but it's Mizar not Mizer and Sol it's our Sun not our planet!! (In case you don't know it Sol it's sun in latin and also french and I think Spanish, in italian we say Sole, very close there's a trace of this root also in english: the adjective solar)

i was expecting more out of endless nights, there just seemed to be something missing out of these stories. its not like the sandman mythos doesnt translate well into short story form( fear of falling, the winters edge story).

and also as long time sienkewicz fan, i wish he would just stay away from the computer

I picked up "Endless Nights" on the weekend Smile then introduced the Sandman to a colleague on monday when she came over to visit, and read the first two stories. I think she found them a little creepy, but at the same time she understood.

I liked the cyclical nature of Death's story, and the mythic quality of many of the others, but I really liked Despair's story. I see that makes me a bit of an odd one out in this thread Wink I think Despair was written very sympathetically in the Thompson Manga, but I think that the story in "Endless Nights" was very creepy, but very breathtaking.

It gives Despair breadth (ok, probably not a good word considering the *look* of the character) and uses themes I think we as readers and people can recognise. We've all heard the urban myth about the guy who was retrenched and kept on as if he were working, and the archetypes and descriptions are eerily familiar. I think that this chapter captures the idea of Despair.

*ratty is rambling*

Does anyone elses' edition have a spelling mistake in portrait 7 of Despair (p.88)? Memery instead of memory? Just curious.

Yes we all do, it's a weird typo because apparently it wasn't there in any of the final drafts but it appered just once the book was mass-printed, which means that it must have been changed right before it was printed. At least that's what I've heard.

Ok, so it's been a while since I read Endless Nights, but I would have to say that the Desire story was a great story I never expected to read about Desire. I wasn't really a fan of him/her in the Sandman series, but this story forced me to examine Desire in a different light. Also, I liked how the backstory behind Dream and Desire was cleared up (gasp! they used to be close????) ha! Delirium and Despair were confusing, but I think I should read them again (hell, I need to reread the entire Sandman series). I agree that Destruction was a little bland, but this might be because the art kind of turned me off (unfortunatly in the world of comics, the visual has a lot to do with the perception of the story. after all, we are human). And I didn't expect much from Destiny, because really how complex can a character that knows everything that ever has or ever will occur be? He's kind of tragic in that way, and I think that might be something that Mr. Gaiman has in mind, though I wouldn't presume to know what goes on in that brainy British head....mmmmm brainy.

I've been a longtime fan of Heavy Metal, and I always thought Neil should do some Sandman stories with some of them; Royo, Altuna, Frezzato, etc.

So I figure a Desire story illustrated by Manara has to be a killer app. But Manara didn't bring his A game.

I thought Delerium in that fullpage portrait was totally hot. Big Grin

Spoiler
In the Despair story, the guy with the cats. Why didn't he just boot them out? They would still die, but I don't see how he could be held liable for that.

wait... it seems like a lot of people are criticizing the delirium story... you're crazies! that was my favorite story in the collection! and others are saying that it wasn't very good because they didn't know what to expect... they were like " i have no backround on the endless..." well... um... it seems to me that that is kinda the point. you are getting backround on the endless. now for my one critiscism... despair... i liked the 15 portraits of despair, but i desire to learn more about her.

I remember seeing that! Wow! I'm so happy it popped back up here. I think seeing that "ad" in MAD magazine was one of the first things that tipped me off there was a much larger Gaiman cult following out there than I originally thought. "There has to be a lot more Sandman fans," I remember thinking. "Why would MAD print this if there's no one who would get it?" It was really comforting.

Well, MAD Magazine IS owned by DC, which owns Vertigo, which more or less owns Sandman, so it's not too big of a stretch for them to self-promote. They did a parody of an Identity Crisis cover too with John Kerry crushed by issues that he flip-flopped on. I'm not sure whether or not the general public get it, but I always think it's hilarious.
