I learned the other night that there is an area of the Sahara Desert somewhat mysteriously strewn with chunks of extremely ancient natural green-yellow glass. Did this phenomenon perhaps influence Dream and Nada's story?

If this is true, very directly. Gaiman was always open about his inspirations, and it is very apparent that he built his story - as everybody builds every story - upon the best stuff he could find and put together.
