Here's a question, can anyone help?
In one of the last installments of The Sandman, Hob tells is girlfriend that Catherine of Aragon (Henry VIII's first wife, mother of Queen Mary I) was black. Is this just a gag, or is there historical evidence for this? I think Hob's account is that Catherine is of Moorish ancestry... any one got any ideas? |

I no little about history, but what the hell, I live in Aragon...
Catherine of Aragon was daughter to Ferdinand the Catholic and, well, his wife ELizabeth the CAtholic. None of them were black, nor close to it (in fact Elizabeth was blonde, something unusual here at that time). They also didn't have any Moorish ascent -unless this is a very very very obscure fact not many people know. We're talking about the Catholic kings, the ones who expelled the Moors from Spain, who descended from the visigoths who had been pushed to the North the year 711 when Spain was conquered by the Moors. I doubt there was any mixing of blood in those families. Most likely, Catherine was just dark skinned an dark haired, which to the English of the time might have seemed black. |

Starving artist - well, not starving, but if you happen to have an extra biscuit lying around . . . Member |
She is represented as dark in writings and pictures, but considering her daughter had the reddish hair/pale skin Tudor colouring, she definitely wasn't black in the sense we use it today.
