My brother was browsing in Ottakar`s and noticed they had several comic books featuring Lucifer Morningstar and knowing my interest in all things Gaiman bought them to my attention. I`m assuming this is a spin-off series from 'Sandman' but I don`t know the name of the author or how true he`s been to Neil`s vision and I`m wondering if this series has any merits of it`s own, or is it Vertigo trying to milk the last drop from the cash cow?

Selfishness is not living as one wishes to live, it is asking others to live as one wishes to live. ~ Oscar Wilde

Sometimes it is said that man can not be trusted with the government of himself. Can he, then, be trusted with the government of others? Or have we found angels in the forms of kings to govern him? ~ Thomas Jefferson

I read the first few but then it fell victim to the budget. What I read I liked, and I think it's gotten fairly good reviews. If I remember correctly some of the art wasn't my thing, but it's been quite a while since I've picked one up. I don't think it's hack stuff trying to capitalize on a spinoff, but beyond that I just can't say much ...

There were a couple of threads where this was discussed before but I don't seem to find them right now. I've read the first 3 and what I've seen so far I've liked, to the point of wanting to see more. I don't know if the quality is maintained afterwards. The author is Mike Carey and I think he's pretty good except for being somewhat similar in style to Neil. That's ok when you do a spin-off but might not be if he wants to start his own thing later.

I've read all the graphic novels so far and I love them. Mike Carey's cosmology is a weird and wonderful beastey. Not as concise and, to be honest, probably not as clever as Neil's. But what he lacks in subtlety he certainly makes up for in ascending drama - every graphic novel has some new universe shattering crisis unveiled. Not too surprising when you're dealing with the second most powerful entity in all creation.

I've liked Carey's work in Hellblazer so far. I've always wanted to pick up some Lucifur issues, but continuity is probly a pain to get through by now.

Well I'm dealing with the continuity things by starting with the first book... I don't like individual issues of comics anyway, something has to be bound in a book to be worth my attention.

It is indeed a continuance of Lucifer, as written by Neil in Sandman. Neil was given a Consultant credit on the comic, and if it was handled anything like the way he handled Books of Magic that means that they will run the ideas past him to see if he likes them before they start writing.

As for how good it is, well if you like Neil (which as you are here i am assuming you do) then you'll like this, only not quite as much, but pretty nearly as much.

OK?

Love the River sig btw.

There were quite a few Sandman spin-offs. I only read one issue of Lucifer, but I enjoyed it -- mostly because I got to see characters again I thought would be gone. I'm guessing that's the appeal for most folks.

Moving this to Neil's other works, even though Neil didn't do them. They were based on his characters -- that's close enough for me.
