I was watching The Labyrinth (my first time seeing it) and I noticed probably an hour into it that it resembled Neil's "A Game of You" storyline very closely at times. The whole thing with Jennifer Connely going on a journey in a magical world with a group of 'Imaginary' friends reminds me a lot of Barbie travelling through the land with her imaginary friends - trying not to get caught by the Cuckoo's minions, just as Connelly tries to evade Jareth. Certain scenes where they were walking through the forest in the Labyrinth felt like Deja Vus. Besides this, Jareth and Morpheus seem to share a lot in common as well. Both are powerful rulers of magical domains, both are a bit arrogant and brooding, both seem distant and at times can be cruel although they're really not bad on the inside, both fall in love with mortals but then ruin their own relationships by wronging the one they love. And they have the same hair! Maybe this is just because both follow a classic character Archetype, both are from the 80's, and because David Bowie happens to look kind of like Morpheus. Has anyone else noticed this connection, and if so, what's your opinion on it?

I haven't seen Labyrinth since forever, so I cant comment on the similarities.
But A Game of You wasn't written in the 80's, it was written in the early 90's. - Michael My boring blog: http://www.xanga.com/mtxx "This is the spring without end / This is the summer of malcontent / This is the winter of your mind" |

It's not just character archaetypes, it's story archaetypes. Labrynth and Underworld stories like these are metephorical expressions of the journey of life. The two we're talking about deal particularly with the psychological transition of the female protagonist between the fantiastic worlds of chlildhood and the realities of adulthood- the distant, romantic male figure being a major feature here as the child learns how to think of and feel about the opposite gender- where the younger girl would view boys with simple scorn.
(Did you notice- the only really noticeable female character in Labrynth- the trash lady- represented the enemy within Sara, her obsessive clinging to childhood things.) If you really want that connection driven home, by the way- look at the Labrynth sequal that Neil and Dave McKean are making. Mirrormask. Of course it isn't out yet. This message has been edited.
