I know someone who can portray Death very well. She attended the annual Lantern Parade here in my university (University of the Philippines). I think she was with her organization and I noticed they were also dressed up as other characters from Gaiman's works (I saw Delirium, Corinthian, Mazikeen, and Timothy Hunter from Books of Magic). I got a pretty good look at her too. She has quite dramatic eyes but what really got to me was her smirk. It was almost as if I was really seeing Death come to life.

Oh yes, and the girl I saw was petite, just the exact build of Death as she was drawn. I don't think she's exactly pale, but that's what make-up is for. I'm just curious if she's had acting taining or something because after the parade I couldn't find her anymore. It's pretty hard too, considering that the university is huge and there are a lot of students. Maybe I should stalk all organizations and find out where she is. I think I could still recognize her by the smirk.

Check out "Brief Lives" where she was confronting Dream. You see the height? She only appears tall because she's thin. As I recall from artist's renditions and from the comics, she's one of the smallest of the Endless.

I've never read any of them, so everything you tell me is news! Presumably she's still taller than me - 5'1".

Well, The tallest Death can get is 5'2". Despair is probably about 4'10" and Delirium is about 5' flat. I think Desire is around 5'6", Dream is just about 5'11", Destruction is around 6'4" and Destiny is of course the tallest at 6'6"... I'm not sure though, but I'm basing this on the descriptions by the Narrator of the Endless and on the pictures shown.

From flicking through one of the books I always assumed she was quite tall and willowy. Does anyone know any more about that particular drawing I posted earlier in this thread? How can I just write to the artist and ask him what the inspiration was, because it really doesn't look much like even the others he has drawn?

It's actually like a sort of irony. People usually picture death as the GRim Reaper who's tall and foreboding. Gaiman makes death look more "human" and friendly by turning her into a petite, gorgeous woman.

I was watching Navy NCIS for the first time a few weeks ago. There's a character named Abby, played by Pauly Perrette, who plays a gothy type character, and has a similar spunky attitude, such as Death has. Throughout the entire show I was thinking she could be Death. If you look her up on IMDB.com she's got a bleach blonde do, but in the show she's got black hair.
Neil, if you ever read this, please consider a Scottish actress named Kelly Macdonald (Trainspotting, Gosford Park, Finding Neverland) or American actress Zooey Descanel (Elf, All the real Girls, Mumford) to play Death. No matter what, we all know you'll make a great movie!
Seriously. Straighten her hair, goth her up. Her facial structure is just right, and she can go from sass to serious in a heartbeat. She can convince as 26 or 16 - adult / teen - immortal / mortal no prob. Good with accents. Plus she's gorgeous.
I agree with Barrymore50. I think she is friendly enough to want one to follow her into the underworld. She could also pull off the gothic look. But if Neil finds an unknown actress to play Death I think it will be the right.
All I have to say is that thank goodness Faruza Balk (sp?) has not entered the conversation here. I read in a magazine a year or so ago (could have been Wizard but I don't remember exactly) that they were serisouly considering her for the role. I was not pleased. Yes, she has the whole goth thing going on but she is too tough looking, she doesn't portray sweet and cute very well. I am very happy that I have not heard anything else of that casting choice in a long time. I seriously think that an unknown would be the best way to go.
"Despair made no sense when one had no understanding of the purpose - and strange possibilities - of existence."
The little girl who played Miette would be wonderful as Death. She was a great actress then, and also had this charisma about her. I'll try to find a pic of her.
