anyway, Doom is the 8th Endless. not Doom the abstract concept. Victor Von Doom, who once stole the Power Cosmic and could figure out how to become the 8th Endless if he really wanted to... imagine an Endless unbound by any rules but his own (which tend to be of the 'don't treat guests badly' nature.... he's got rules)... ohhhhhhhhh yea

*lol*

I think the 8th endless is Determination

A tall, slender man, he is somewhat angular-straight lines, straight angles, hard muscles. Walks swiftly, easily, too easily, slouching a little, a loose kind of ease in motion, as if movement requires no effort whatever, a body to which movement is as natural as immobility, without a definite line to divide them, a light, flowing, lazy ease of motion, an energy so complete that is assumes the ease of laziness. He has large, long hands-prominent joints, knuckles, wrist-bones, with hard, prominent veins on the backs of the hands. His hands look neither young nor old, but exceedingly strong. His clothes always disheveled, disarranged, loose and suggesting...A certain savage unfitness for clothes. Raven black, loose, straight hair, always disheveled.

His face is hard, forbidding, not in the least attractive according to conventional standards, more liable to be considered plain than handsome, with very prominent cheekbones, and a sharp, straight nose. He has a large mouth-long and narrow with a thing upper lip and rather prominent lower one, which gives him the appearance of an eternal, frozen half-smile, an ironic, hard, uncomfortable smile, mocking and contemptuous. He has wrinkles, dimples, or slightly prominent muscles, all of that and none definitely, around the corners of his mouth. His face is rather pale, without color on the cheeks. He has dark black eyebrows, straight and thin. His eyes are dark grey, steady, expressionless eyes-eyes that refuse to show expression, to be exact. He has very long straight, dark black eyelashes-the only soft, gentle touch of the whole face-a surprising touch in his grim expression. When he laughs-which happens often-his mouth opens wide, with a complete, loose kind of abandon, and he chuckles. Other times, he simply grins and laughs to himself under his breath with a mocking aura that grabs the admiration of his peers. He has a low, hard, throaty voice-not rasping, but rather blurred in its tone, though distinct in its sound, with the same soft, lazy fluency as his movements, both of them being neither soft nor lazy.

He is not even militant or defiant about his utter selfishness. No more than he could be defiant about the right to breathe and eat. He has the quiet, complete, permanent calm of an iron conviction. For it, he has no dramatics, no hysteria, and no sensitiveness about it-because he has no doubts. It is a quiet, almost indifferent acceptance of an irrevocable fact.

His is a quick, sharp mind, courageous and not afraid to be hurt, has long since grasped the world is not what he is and just exactly what the world is. Consequently, he can no longer be hurt psychologically. The world has no painful surprise for him, since he has accepted long ago just what he has to expect from the world.

He does not suffer, because he does not believe in suffering. Defeat or disappointments are merely a part of the battle. Nothing can really touch him. He is concerned only with what he does, not how he feels. How he feels is entirely a matter of his own, which cannot be influenced by anything or anyone on the outside. His feeling is a steady, unruffled flame, deep and hidden, a profound joy of living and of knowing his power, a joy that is not even conscious of being joy, because it is so steady, natural, and unchangeable.

He will be himself at any cost-the only thing he really wants of life. Deep inside of him, he knows he has the ability to win the right to be himself. Consequently, his life is clear, simple, satisfying and joyous-even if very hard outwardly.
He is in conflict with the world in every possible way-and at complete peace with himself. His chief difference from the rest of the world is that he was born without the ability to consider others. As a matter of form and necessity on the way, as one meets fellow travelers-yes, he practices courtesy. As a matter of basic, primary consideration-no, it's not even an option.

Religion, he has none, not a speck of it. He was born without any ˜religious brain center.' He does not understand, or even conceive of the instinct for bowing and submission. His whole capacity for reverence is centered on himself. There is no need of mystical ˜consolation,' no other life. He thinks too much of the world to expect or desire any other. If he had a religion, it would be called Amalgamated Gnosticism, a religion of understanding, self-empowering, moral egotism, and reasonable constructive work.

No matter what he wears, be it is casual shirt and jeans or his formal armor, he seems nude to those who hardly know hom. He is aware of this, and stands as confidently as a man stands before his own innocence. Not a fool-hardy or apathetic confidence that he produces, but a natural one that has come to him the same a sleep comes to others. A sword that he is just as much a part of him, as he is of it, rests at his hip, tied shut into its sheathe by a ribbon even he cannot rip.

His realm is a tower expanding constantly upwards into a sky of yellow clouds, but almost as quickly it is built, chunks of it break off and fall. The tower's name is Amalgam, a giant skyscraper that redefines the concept of architecture. It is built in a way not to humble mankind, but to humble the sky, the sea, and the earth with the achievement of humanity. Each floor is be themed around a deity, demon, or angel that humans once prayed to, but atop the highest floor is a statue of the heroic spirit of mankind, holding the Divine Light in one hand. The tower has one basement, a hall called the Library of Babel, but its shelves have no books, only spiderwebs and collected dust.

In his mind, the story of Tetsuo is to show the triumph of what man is, what he wants, and how he gets it. He needs a triumphant epic of man's spirit, a hymn glorifying man's ˜I.' He needs to feel every conceivable hardship and obstacle on his way-and how he triumphs over them, why he has too.

His world, the one he seeks but cannot create, cannot exist. His reason is Touboku, the philosophy of the fallen tree.

He is the eighth Endless. He is Decay, formerly known as Development.

Forgot to clarify. He goes by the name Tetsuo frequently, same as Dream goes by Morpheus, though his true name is Dustin.

Defiance?

Funnily enough, I came up with a character called Defiance a while ago, description, backstory and everything. She looks like a teenager with unruly red hair, solid in build but with angular features. Her eyes are a steely blue. She wears clothing with no obvious theme, although you could easily call her a tomboy. She smiles a lot, a fierce, challenging grin. She used to be called Determination but changed it when it became apparent that something stronger was called for. Her sigil is a staff. I came up with the idea after someone wrote a fanfic featuring an Endless called Honor (originally Duty) who was male. I got the urge to even things out. I've also come up with a group that's sort of secondary to the Endless called the Undying Trinity. It consists of Luck (male, young looking, bit of a rogue but basically okay), Love (androgenous, beautiful but a bit of a tricky customer), and Liberty (female, attractive). Luck came first, 'cause lets face it, the universe needs luck and perhaps more importantly, people need to belive in him. Then I came up with Love, inspired no doubt by someone commenting that love and desire aren't the same thing. Liberty is basically just the result of me needing another L. To distinugish them from the Endless, the trinity are all quite fair haired and nowhere near as pale. They're not as dysfunctional either but that's probably just because there's fewer of them.

Did anyone else catch a reference to Del, (I don't remember where) saying that she changed from Delight to Delirium, and that she would change again in the future? When that issue came out, I looked through the dictionary under "Del" trying to figure out what the next incarnation could be. The best I came up with was "Delicious." And that seems kinda lame.

Yeah, I have no idea.

Dearth.
This whole thing is reminding me of Pollution from Good Omens.

(Which was very likely true.)

Okay I know when Dread (aka Echo) happened, but what about the others? I once read a post by someone who wished Dread was for real. I haven't read the Dreaming but even I think that wouldn't be good. And yes, Decay is a very good idea for an Endless. Actually it's given me an idea. Even if we ignore the comedy answers we're well on our way to accumulating a whole new set? Anyone want to see if we can get up to 14? Please post more details then just the names though, you know sigil, description, stuff like that.

my answer isn't a comedy answer

i can think of several possiblities... heck, i could do a fanfic

talking to Destruction-- taking over his domain in exchange for somehow making Destruction human/creative/whatever

a loser like John Dee trapped Dream for 70 years. Dr Doom has real sorcerous knowledge; think what he could do

Doom gets a plot device like the Cosmic Cube

what about the Dentist? or Denial?

I've got to get round to reading the rest of the series. I don't quite get why anyone would fake being an Endless. I'd have thought you'd get found out pretty quickly.

In Mike Carey's Lucifer series, the Titans Gyges and Garamas pretend to be "Deciet" and "Duplicity" of the Endless in an attempt to take control of the Dreaming. Then they find out that Yahweh has abdicated his throne and left his creation and they leave to try and take control of the Silver City.
