Hmm I always wondered about this. As they say he died.

Not in the Sandman, but in another of Neil's comic series, The Books of Magic, a young would-be magician starts learning about magic with the help of four prominent comic magicians, (including John Constantine), including taking a trip to the land of Faerie, where we see Titania using Hamnet as her servant.

Ah now that does not surprise me, though it does give an odd irony.

Yeah, although from poor Will's point of view, it doesn't make much difference... Hamnet was just as lost to Will as if he had died. But I had never thought of it that way before, and you're right, that is a very sad piece of irony.
