I read AICN so you don't have to!

The guy who gave us Batman and Robin is "eyeing Sandman."

This is a more worksafe link...

but I agree.. I would rather not see a Sandman movie than to see a badly made one.. Schumacher better believe that he is going to be working closely with Neil if he is going to attempt this...

Okay, so they just lost the entire Sandman fanbase with that decision. What's next? Giving Dream a tan and making him 'not so spooky'?

As per the blog, Schumacher's in a very, very long line of people interested in making a Sandman movie. A line that also includes Michael Jackson. No worries.

Batmanuel, I don't know if Neil does have any say over the Sandman movie, though, unless it's reverted back to him recently. There were apparently some awful scripts floating around that had Sandman getting into fistfights. My understanding was that WB could have greenlit them without Neil's endorsement (it was a DC licensing thing -- not sure why Death doesn't fall under the same thing).

Amy, do you know how he held onto the Death movie rights?

As I understand it, Warner Brothers owns the rights to the Death movie. If Neil wants to direct it, it has to be produced by WB or one of its subsidiary studios. That's one reason the movie has is still in "Development Hell." None of the Warner film companies seems quite like an ideal fit for this sort of movie.

*cough* Warner owns DC and all of its imprints, including VERTIGO. i'm pretty sure Warner has a subsidiary studio that's an "ideal fit" for Death or any other Sandman-related movies. though i could be mistaken.

The sequence of events (if I'm remembering the details correctly) is something like this: Warner wanted to release the Death movies under the big Warner Brothers imprint. Neil said, "But Warner Brothers makes 'event' movies with spaceships exploding and Will Smith jumping off rooftops. This is a little 15 million dollar movie."

The Warner Brothers people said, "We'd like to try making a little 15 million dollar movie. We love the material."

So Neil brought them a screenplay, and they said, "This is a little 15 million dollar movie. We can't make this."

So Neil brought the script to New Line, and they said, "We'd love to make this, but can you take about four million dollars off the budget?" And they went into budget negotiations with Neil, but in the end, they couldn't reach an agreement.

So Neil has to find another studio that will produce the movie, and that studio has to be owned by Warner.

I do not think that you can do all of Sandman in one film, or even three. In order to have a decent film trilogy they need to focus on a smaller aspect of the whole, or perhaps just turn preludes and nocturnes into a single horror film (which preludes and nocturnes is to a good extent)

Isn't that the guy who made the most recent PotO? I guess I can forgive him, then. And I don't understand what are you people bitching about sometimes. My point is, if they can, for example, make V wear a PINK APRON and the film still turns out to be surprisingly good, then I guess ANYTHING is possible.

Just trust them a little more.

Although...

I said this on another board too. Only the magic Burton/Depp dream team could make a decent Sandman film, and even then it would be their interpretation, not a perfect transformation of the books.
