Looking for a Gaiman quote on comic book panels and narrative

Hi,

I'm preparing a university assignment on comic books and visual narrative and am looking for a quote I came across some years ago by - or possibly about - Neil Gaiman where he discusses the narrative techniques that are unique to comic books.

Specifically, I'm pretty sure he talked about the three panels in chapter 8 of The Kindly Ones where we have three identical panels of Rose sitting on her bed (after she found out that Jack is involved with someone else).

Gaiman (or whoever wrote the article/gave the interview) I vaguely recall used this sequence as an example of something you can't do in other media such as film or prose, because the gutter between the identical panels invokes a particular sense of time passing that's peculiar to the comic book medium. I think there was a mention of Scott McCloud's work on panel-to-panel transitions in the same interview or article.

I think the interview or article may have come from a magazine or book but my searches - online or offline - hasn't dug anything up. I've skimmed through my copies of Hy Bender's Sandman Companion and Joseph McCabe's Hanging Out with the Dream King and I don't think it came from either of these books.

If this rings bells with anybody I'd very incredibly grateful.

Thank you!

I thought it might be in Warren Ellis' Come In Alone, but I can't peg it, so probably not. I found several different pages on the theme, but all of them are talking about McCloud's book with no real interview or quote from another author *shrug*

The Sandman Companion, by Hy Bender, chapter 14, "Music, Poetry, and Patterns", page 252 in my edition, under the section, "The Rhythm of Panels". Hope this helps.
