i have to agree with fables and bone, great work.
if your looking for great art and social\political commentary you really have to give DAVE SIM a peek. he has a book or painstaking 15pp issues of a title called CEREBUS. i recommend HIGH SOCIETY as a starting point by you should also buy the debut CEREBUS for reference. these are books #2 and #1 respectfully. might i add very funny very funny stuff. also with bone the spin-off BIG JOHNSON BONE'S RAT TAILS or something or other is drop dead funny and cute for the kids. |

I have to agree that Fables is an awesome series. Any fans of Jack of Fables in here?
I also love Lucifer(the comic). Green Lantern, Northlanders and GOON! "My life has been extraordinary, blessed and cursed and won."--muzzle-smashing pumpkins "Some wills are too strong to die. And there are powers to formidable to be contained." -Metall-x "How are you doing all this?""I never saved any for the trip back" (Gattaca) |

I would like to add to the list of those who like Fables and Jack of Fables. I also recommend Return to Wonderland and the follow up series Tales from Wonderland and Beyond Wonderland. There is also a one shot graphic novel called the Death Eaters which I enjoyed.

I've been talking comics with Smaug and Snazz, and am heading to the comic shop tomorrow. I remembered this thread, and sifting through now. I remember reading some of these and liking them muchly! I'll have to see if they have any. As for Transmet, which was to be my next purchase, my shop can't order any of vols 1 and 2 because DC has them out of print, they're reprinting/recutting the books for a spring '09 release. I'd love an omnibus/absolute offering of this ... no details as of yet. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I live for three things: The Girls, football, and live jazz. What do you live for? Let passion drive you. |

So, I was looking for something different, and I found it, but not in the way I was expecting. I went in with a list from here and a list or two that Smaug pointed me to as well as ideas from our chat. I looked many of them up, found about half in stock. The no-brainer would have been Transmetropolitan, but they didn't have Vol 1 in stock, and DC has it currently out of print (though yes, I know I can still get it through Amazon, that wasn't the point at the time) and will be re-releasing all of the Transmet trades after "recoloring and recutting them" .. whatever that means. So, as I walked back and forth through the aisles as different titles occurred to me to look up, I was chatting with one of the clerks. Towards the end of my two-hours there, after talking about such books as the Pistol Whip series and Super Spy, he suggested DC: The New Frontier by Darwyn Cooke.
Yep, a super hero book, of vintage DC characters. Talk about getting something different! I won't go into a review of it right now, I need some time for that (I might plunk one down in my goodreads) but suffice to say that I'm glad I went ahead and bought both volumes at once, I devoured it in a week, and I even used the last of my bday money to buy the DVD. I liked it that much. You could do a lot worse even if you've never been a huge fan of the DC characters. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I live for three things: The Girls, football, and live jazz. The latest Joker graphic novel is an excellent read, even if you figure out how the story ends before Harvey Dent telegraphs it to you.

Who did that one, Furious. Was that Azzarello's book? There was review of that in a Wizard a couple of issues ago, haven't read it yet though.

Yes! Although Azz said his spin on the Joker had nothing to do with Heath Ledger's portrayal
I also finished reading a graphic novel of my current favorite Marvel villian, Bullseye. Bullseye: Greatest Hits also has Steve Dillon art, so everyone has a lantern jaw. If you haven't done so yet, avoid the Secret Invasion megaseries. Even though Brian Michael Bendis is writing it, it's a mess to follow and the art is too angular and thin-lipped for the eyes. (hint: the aliens lose) This message has been edited. Last edited by: Furious, |

I wasn't touching the mammoth Secret Invasion with a 10' longbox. Just reading the Wizard articles about the series over the past several months ... sheesh! I tell you, though, the SkrullSpiderwoman cover on last month's Wizard (or the month before) was eye catching.

Spider-woman is distracting, isn't she?
The Walking Dead is still a great read, Punisher: War Zone is better than Punisher right now, Air is interesting, and Justice Society of America is suggesting that Kingdom Come will occur in it's universe. I'm also reading Rage of the Red Lanterns, Thunderbolts, Deadpool, and MAD, which is way too good to be a kid's parody magazine. |
