How many of the people on the board also read (either past or present tense) Asterix? It's one of the few comics (apart from the odd Tintin) that I read as a kid, and I used to love them, but then somehow I grew out of them. I still have fond memories of them, though, especially the one where Asterix and Obelix join the Roman army because Obelix is in love with this blonde chick... It has a wonderfully accurate description of the machinations of bureaucracy that reminds me so much of Uni.

I can't claim to be a very dedicated Asterix reader, but I've read some of them, including the "join the Roman Army" one.

They're good fun, but not enough for me to go spend money on them (which I do when I anticipate wanting to re-read things). I just sponge off my brother-in-law's collection whenever I can. Wink

Also have very fond memories of Asterix as a kid, went back and reread a whole load of them a few years ago, they are still good for reviving childhood memories and a quick laugh. I was always proud i got a lot of their names as a child, I mean how many eight year olds get the humour of calling the fishmonger Unhygienix?

I read it, still have a couple of magazines at home and VHS of the movies (the animated not the acted ones) and I love it!!!
What do you people think about the movies?
I liked them in a way...The second one was totally crazy...
Long Live Asterix,
Tin tin you mentioned is also good, at least I used to read as a child...

I love Astérix !! I grew up with Astérix. One of my favourites childhood photos shows me "running" away from my godmother (I must be no more than two...) with "Astérix chez les Belges" in my hands, and a delighted smile on my face. The book is nearly as tall as I am... Maybe that's why even now I'm still assimilating Astérix with childhood happiness.

Anyway, my favourite book is the one where the Romans send one of them (named Tullius Detritus... means garbage... I wonder what he's called in English) to sow discord in the village. I loved the way this guy managed to make people hate each other just by standing there and making insidious comments. And of course, I loved the way the Gauls' unchanging friendship defeated him in the end.

And the one with the Roman army was great too... The only ones I didn't really like were those published after Goscinny's death. Quite not the same.

And I'm not very fond of the movies either. Maybe more of the second one, but the only really good part of it was the making-of.

I love Asterix. somewhere my family should have a copy of a french comic, which I can't understand, but like nevertheless.

I love the way he and Obelix occasionally get into an argument and then immediately run into each other's arms for a tearful make-up scene.

I dunno, there are a few things about this comic that never fail to put a smile on my face, regardless of how good the storyline might or might not be.

I ordered a copy of the first volume last week after watching the live action Asterix movie. I know at some point as a child I was exposed to Asterix, but I've no idea when or how. Those vague memories matched the movie though and made me want to explore the series

I read an interview with Sandman artist Teddy Kristiansen in a Danish newspaper - he was interviewed because he won an Eisner - and he's doing some work on the new Asterix movie (the Vikings) which is being produced in Denmark.

btw, it's strange that Asterix is the only Goscinny scripted series that is popular outside Europe, around here both Lucky Luke and Iznogoud are also much loved by comics fans.

And has anybody read "Nicholas", by Goscinny & Sempé ? It's a series of illustrated books telling the story of a young boy and his friends at school. It's very funny, and at the same time quite touching.

I read it all when I was a child, and a few months ago Goscinny's daughter had 80 unpublished Nicholas stories gathered in a big book. And it was great to take up again with Nicholas and his friends !

- Chez nous, m'a dit Alceste, il y aura du boudin blanc, et de la dinde."

- At my place, said Alceste, there'll be white pudding and turkey."

I seem to remember Clover from the board talking about the Nicholas books. They ARE translated into Danish, but I've never read them. Maybe I should finally get round to it.

Okay, I searched in the library database and found both Danish and English editions of the Nicholas books.

They're sweet. Dunno whether they'd be your thing, though; on the whole they're not *that* different from so many of those childhood memoirs. Probably better written, but in essence fairly similar.

Speaking of the characters clever names, I also felt REALLY bright when I started learning English in 5th grade and figured out what Iznogoud's name meant. Of course it helped that in the Danish editions they spelled it Iznogood instead of the French name Iznogoud.

I was a BIG Iznogoud fan when I was a kid. Smile

I read both Lucky Luke and Nicholas but Iznogoud is new for me...I guess I should have a look at it. For some reason I always found Lucky Luke annoying but I really cant explaind why...
