I did. Have you read Starship Titanic? From what I hear, it's okay.

No, I've been out of the douglas adams loop. I did read Dirk Gently, though. That one was GREAT!!

There have been other threads in the past but all but one have been deleted, and i did link to it in my post that just got eaten, but i'm not going to now cause i'm angry at the board *kicks it*

Anyway he is much loved by a lot of posters here.

He did unfortunately pass away a few years ago, so you can't really be out of the loop as far as he is concerned.

Starship Titanic the book is written by another author and is okay, doesn't quite have his panache, i would really like to get my hands on the original game he did though.

And i can reccommend The Salmon of Doubt, which is a good combination of memorial and unfinished works and bits and peices.

Also Neil has written a biograhy thing about Douglas called Dont Panic, it's good a bit dry at times but definately has it's moments.

Back when I first started getting audio books in the mid-90s and didn't know I should always get unabridged, I listened to an abridged book of Starship Titanic. The story flowed like a video game. Unsurprising considering the origins. Oh, and the author was Terry Jones, aka Monty Python member, writer on Labyrinth and Lady Cottington

And to the Douglas fans, if you haven't read it, find Last Chance To See, it's excellant!

oh yay! a Last Chance to See recommendation! I've read everything. the fifth book in the Hitchhiker's trilogy depressed me...what was it called? Mostly Human.

The Salmon of Doubt... I put off buying that for a very long time because I knew there was an unfinished Dirk Gently book in there and couldn't face reading it without knowing the ending!

And it did frustrate and depress me very much when I eventually read it. But the rest of the book is very touching/funny/silly/off beat and a lovely way to say goodbye to a brilliant man.

Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency confused me seriously until I read it a few times. It was my first encounter with the concept of Schrodinger's Cat. The Long Dark Tea Time of the Soul is also lots of fun. I shall greatly miss Dirk Gently and I do hope that no one ever decides to film either of those books because they will surely mess it up!

Yeah. It was really sad when he died, wasn't it? And I'm sorry but they didn't even put it in the news that probably one of the greater British authors of the 20th century had died. That REALLY pissed me off.

You know how I found out????

I was reading the comics in the newspaper a few days after he died and in the comic strip "Get Fuzzy" it said "Rest in Peace Douglas Adams." Or something to that degree.

Here it is... this was the comic. This was how I found out about his death when it happened:

Yeah I am sure it did. As the UK was broadcasting news of Adams' death, the USA's top story was probably something like: "J-LO BUYS NEW SHOES!!!"

Gah.

Don't know if this deserves to be on this thread, but I got into both Neil Gaiman and Douglas Adams around the same time, and I was writing a little Novelle (Novela? Petit Novel? I don't know...A little Novel!) about people who are immortal, not vampires or gods, just couldn't be killed, and you could see when I was reading who, becuase my writing style would change from dark and action packed to cynically funny.

If he had died today I would cry my head off. Same thing will happen when Mel Brooks dies.
