This is not about Harry Potter.

The first of Hideyuki Kikuchi's "Vampire Hunter 'D'" Novels has been translated! It is, not surprisingly, very good. According to the translator, the second and third novels are done, with release dates of this month and next January, respectively. Dark Horse is currently negociating the rights to 4-6.
Let us discuss the love/lack of love for our friend. One thing that I noticed for the first time is how much of Castlevania stems from Mr. K's work. Alucard is D without the cool left hand thing.

Honestly, I have only seen parts of the 1985 movie, which didn't have the highest production values, but I quite liked the 2001 movie, "Bloodlust." The book was good. The translation felt well done, without the rediculous addition of current slang, as in the "Slayers" novels. The mood and setting were pretty well established. The only flaw I found was that the description was a bit bald for something that was supposed to be gothic, and the description of the fight scenes was a bit confusing. The author or translator uses "he" and "she" when they should be using a name sometimes. The dialogue was well written, and the characters were well established, though. I give it a positive review of 8 on an arbitrary scale, and will be picking up later volumes. Razz

Welcome to the board! Stop by the World's End and people will shower you with Balloons and Cookies. I like the ink illistrations that Amano uses in the novels themselves. They are actually very different than his character design work.

Just picked up Amano's print book, the images of D are, of course, amazing.

I wish they'd make more D movies.

I haven't yet been able to find the second book. I read the first one and loved it, and loved both the movies, although I do think that while the story of the original movie was great, they could have used more from the book. Also I don't think that the original was as good as "Bloodlust." The first time I saw bloodlust I was with the friend who introduced me to D, and he asked me which I thought was better after I had only seen the first 2 minutes of BL. I had to say that BL was the better.

A lot of the first book is introducing the character, so I think that more can be done with him in the future books. I asked for the second one for x-mas, but will go out and pick it up if I don't get it.
