Is there already one?
If not... I've always been mostly a fiction purchaser, generally in the realm of sci-fi/fantasy. However, I was recently at a bookstore who cleverly put their science section right next to their sci-fi section. Suffice to say, I walked out with a copy of A Brief History of Time, and a few more books on a list of stuff to get later. Anybody got any non-fiction faves? (if it gets too cluttered in here, I might run off and start a separate science book thread) ****************************************** Me in Rock: This Shirt Is Pants | Mr. Fusion Me in blog: izenmania |

Mutants: On Genetic VAriety and the Human Body by Armand Leroi.
Man, we're all freaks. Good non-fiction for anyone interested in the grotesque, evolution, in freak shows or what happens as we get built. For the most part it's a fairly easy read, just the occasional brain stutter. I give it three thumbs up. On one hand. Hermits have no peer pressure |

I enjoyed quite a lot The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene and it makes you feel like you understand something of the string theory. Plus it turns it into an exciting theory too. It reads almost like a novel. The guy is famous for this book, in fact.

Much agreed about The Elegant Universe.
I just bought a book called "At Day's Close," which is a cultural history of nighttime, by A. Roger Ekirch. Haven't started it yet, but it seems to be well-thought-of and I'm looking forward to it. |

Just bought Theo Hoppen's Mid-Victorian Britain.
You know you're bad when you buy history for fun... ------------------------------ You are a Leprechaun. I'm not even sure what you are. Whiskey-soaked reports from your baffling Isle of Ire raise more questions than they answer. Are you a dwarf? Where's your pickax? If you're an elf, why don't you cobble? You'd think with all your gold, you could invest in some land, perhaps a title, and improve your station. Instead, you hide it in meteorologically-determined locations. You're getting killed on inflation, little friend! |

a short history of nearly everything by bill bryson.
but it's taking a long time to get through! ~ I prefer to live in a country that's small, and old, and where no one would ever have the NERVE to wear a cape in public, whether they could leap tall buildings in a single bound or not. trolls are like pigeons..keep feeding them and they keep coming back and shitting in your street. |

A Brief History of Time was supposed to be an easy read, but I still don't get a lot of it.
Asimov wrote prodigious amounts of nonfiction as well as fiction, I have some of his stuff on history, the Bible, science, Shakespeare, humor. |

My favorite Non-fiction author is Graham Hancock, journalist, and some may argue that his books aren't non-fiction. He writes a lot in a genre call speculative archeology/anthropology/prehistory. I really like the way he writes, even if his point of view is biased, he tells his story (history) wonderfully.
Hawking is wonderful. I've also been reading The Dancing Wu Li Masters which also is about quantum mechanics. And I have several great allegories too, Alice in Quantumland and The Einstein Paradox, the latter which really makes these concepts easy to grasp. I read a lot of Psychiatry books, pharmaceutical chemistry, and also have a couple of books on the origins of consciousness that are waiting for me. This message has been edited. Um... I like to read True Crime and collect Jack the Ripper and other Serial Killer/Mass Murderer books.
And then I like to read Math Texts for fun in my spare time. I make my husband nervous sometimes. I was a teenaged cheerleader. |

I liked A Brief History a lot when I was in high school - but years later I look back on some of Hawking's impossibility metaphors and wonder why the hell he did that.
I love Bill Bryson, PJ O'Rourke and I'm really crushing on those DK Publishing books (Universe, Earth and Animal etc) at the moment - which aren't so much about reading as sitting there looking at the pictures and going "whoa". - Soul ______________________________ Written drunk, edited hung over - a brief synopsis of the story of my life. My non-fiction reading really depends on my mood. Like, right now I'm wondering if it's possible I could actually make my own comforter, so I've got a slew of sewing/art nouveau/arts and crafts period/William Morris books checked out to see if anything gels in my head.
Sometimes I'm in the mood for interesting biographies. My all time favorite is either "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" by T.E. Lawrence or Marcus Aereliaus (sp?)'s autobiography. Sometimes I'm in the mood for Florida history. There's this new true-crime paperback that came out about the 1980 serial killer in St Augustine that I've been eyeing. I've got this groovy Florida history book written about 80 years ago that discusses a lot of things not mentioned anymore, or that faded out of common knowledge. It varies. I'm not averse to nonfiction by any means. _____________________________________________________________ Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. Does philosophy and/or religious material count? If so, I'd add most everything by Philip Yancey, specifically What's so Amazing about Grace.
I'm slowly rereading it now. That book kicks my ass everytime. Also hoping to read Howard Zen's Peoples History of the United States and Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom. Yes, my to read list is really piling up... This message has been edited. I heart his fiction and LOVED the non-fic book he did on Disney World. I haven't read his collection of newspaper articles, but I've been meaning to. _____________________________________________________________ Don't you realize? I've just finished Michael Wood's 'In search of the Dark Ages'
apart from being a bit overwhelmed by all the dates and names, it's so fantasticly written. Michael (he's a BBC presenter of lots of history programmes) has such an amazing enthusiasm for the subject that it's never boring and much like an exciting adventure book really. ----------------------------- St.Barbarella: Sexy Tart.
