So, Neil mentioned a forthcoming book by Sherman Alexie in his blog.
One of SA's books - Reservation Blues - is one of my all-time favourite novels. Anyone else read him, liked him? *********************** There once was a bard of Hong Kong Who thought limericks were too long. - Gerard Benson. |

Aw, nuts, no-one else? Not even if I tell you that the premise of Reservation Blues is that Robert Johnson gives his guitar to a Spokane reservation....?
Sherman Alexie is another multitasker - novels, short stories, films, poetry, and he does a damn fine reading, too. *********************** There once was a bard of Hong Kong Who thought limericks were too long. - Gerard Benson. |

I read Sherman Alexie, I do! I've only read his short stories, though. I picked up his short stories after seeing Smoke Signals. ~ . . ~ . . ~ . . ~ . . ~ . . ~ . . ~ . . ~ . . ~ . . ~ . . ~ Weeble Song! Sing along! ~ courtesy Snazzy Snazzypants |

I saw Smoke Signals. I thought it was pretty good. My wife liked it more than I did
I also read one of his short stories in a McSweeney's anthology. It was about zombie Indians, I think (been several years since I read it). That was pretty good, too, but not great. Reservation Blues sounds intriguing, though. ____________________________________________________________________ "Patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. Yum! He rules! Yes also to Smoke Signals, the movie from his story "This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona," which is widely anthologized.
The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven, Indian Killer, and The Toughest Indian in the World are some of the most well-known of his 18 books. He's got a new one just out, Flight, and is publishing a young adult novel in Sept., The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. Saw Smoke Signals and loved it! Then read "Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven" and "Reservation Blues". I have Indian Killer waiting for me back at home.
I also read a transcript of some PBS news show he was on, with all different minorities. He didn't say much, but when he did it was eloquent and awesome. ~*~ You are a Journeyman. I heard him give a talk just after Indian Killer came out. He said something along the lines of thinking that Reservation Blues et al have comedy in them, and was miffed when someone came up to him and said how grim they found them. And then he thought "grim? I'll show them grim" and Indian Killer was the result. (I paraphrase madly, of course.)
Not an especially cheery read, but it is powerful. *********************** There once was a bard of Hong Kong Who thought limericks were too long. - Gerard Benson. |

Oh, geeze. Well, thanks for the info, Hive. I'll make sure to read it when I have a good mood!
