I began it yesterday, and am trying to pace myself with it. It's one of my favorites.

This year I'm reading Hogfather aloud to my birds. I'm not sure they get it, but they have laughed a few times at some of the funny bits.

I've reread the book so many times now that it is like greeting old friends I only see at the holidays as each of the characters are introduced.

But of all the characters that inhabit Discworld, Susan is the one I have the most problems with. It is interesting to watch her grow up and develop, but I am sad her parents had to be killed off in order for her come into her own.

I just finished.
I was quite struck this time by the line death uses to describe humanity:
"The place where the fallen angel meets the rising ape."
I think that Pratchett very much on his game with this one, all of the characters felt IMPORTANT, rather than being included for a joke, or to move the plot along.
Also, Hex is awesome.

I love the various impromptu godlets that show up. The imagination-run-wild quotient is very high and much fun. (The run amok creativity reminds me of the scenes in Diana Wynne Jones' The Ogre Downstairs where the kids inadvertently animate a bunch of different toys - things like Lego blocks, not obvious things like toy soldiers - and she invents an entire biology for each type ...)

And the Raven's attempts to be cute so that people will give him goodies ... except his ideas of goodies are not the same as anyone else's ... Big Grin

And the department store Grotto scene: the mother being so horrified about the sword, and Death's comments about how educational it will be.

You are a Confectioner. Who can take a sunrise and sprinkle it with dew? Actually, that's Bob The Enchanter, two doors down on the left. But you make delectable treats, which is no simple feat considering Oompa Loompas won't be invented for three centuries. Not only do you delight with your sweets, but you've paved the way for a new profession: dentistry!

(Hmmm ... no one else is talking ... Frown )

Just read the scene* with Susan and Teatime at the locked door in the Tooth Fairy castle.

"Hi! she said brightly. "I'm the inner baby-sitter!"

You know, I really like the way Susan is written. And Agnes (Carpe Jugulum etc.) Some male writers don't make me comfortable with how they handle their female point-of-view characters, but Pratchett's OK by me.

*I'm only reading it on the Metro on the way home from work, so it's taking awhile ...

Are there any other books with Susan besides "Hogfather" and "Soul Music?" I'm only halfway through the series.

Awesome! *makes notes that next week he must rescue any possible Discworld books from the fall of Rome, aka Media Play closing*

Thief of Time is one of my faves!

Susan is a fun character, but I totally relate to Agnes. I often feel that by Terry Pratchett's definitions, I really am a witch!

I do feel that his female characters are becoming more and more similar though. Except for Sybil Vimes, who started out strong and assertive but has become more and more soppy lately.

The main thing I took away from Hogfather was the way it broadened my view of lies.

I always viewed lies as something bad, but I really like the theme that there are some good lies you need to believe so that they can come to be.

So looking forward to the movie of this one next year (*knock wood*).

Having a baby does that to you, unfortunately. It also seems to cause the loss of IQ points, although they start coming back in dribs and drabs as the sprout gets more independent.

I dunno, I don't feel that Susan and Agnes are that similar. I really identify with Agnes, but I more admire Susan.

Soul Music, Small Gods, and wierd sisters (or however he spells it) are my personal favorites. I'd definatly agree though that Pratchet's works gets better as he ages!

having just re-read Jingo for the bazillionth time... Lady Sybil is childless in this book, but she's extremely soppy. so apparently it's just marriage that made her that way.

Although it does seem to be a matter of "that's what society expects of her" and she has always done what was expected of her.
